Listening to Music via HTPC to Reciver via HDMI

Featured Replies

Not sure where to ask this question but I figured someone here might know the answer.

I have my HTPC hooked up to my receiver via HDMI.  I also have my PS3 doing the same thing.  If I pop in a music CD into my PS3, everything plays fine through my Yamaha 6080.  I can select Neo 6 Music Decoding or PLII decoding.  So far so good.  However when I play a music file from my Unraid Server via WMP, my receiver shows MPCM and I can't select Neo 6 or PLII decoding.  Most of my music is stored in Windows Media Lossless or mp3.  I've gone through every setting and can't figure out why music from my unraid is showing as MPCM.

Anyone have any ideas?

We need more information. Not all hardware is created equal and not all hardware+software combinations will bitstream the audio.

What hardware are you using to connect your HTPC via HDMI? Is it AMD HDMI Video+Audio? Is it Nvidia HDMI Video+Audio? Is it Intel HDMI Video+Audio?

What software are you using? Which OS? Which player software? Have you tried a different media player?

If its windows 7 you need to see if you have passthrough selected.  It should be an option in the sound properties.

I figured it out today.  Turns out with my ATI Card, I have it set to 5.1 in the Control Panel for Sound for watching movies.  I switched it to Stereo and voila!  It's a pain though.  Depending on if I'm listening to music or watching a movie, I have to switch it.

Thanks anyhow!

You might want to look into using XBMC.  Not only is it far better than any Windows media player/media center, it generally figures stuff like this out for you, meaning you shouldn't have to switch anything depending on what type of media you are playing.
