May 28, 201016 yr Hi, I am planning on building my first unRaid setup once all my hardware arrives. I have I few question before: 1. I have one full 1TB HDD that I want to use as is in the setup - can I add it and keep the data? how? 2. Can I later move some of the data from this HDD to a new additional HDD inside the setup? How? How should I format the new drives? what file system? Thank you,

Using the linux command prompt, file explorers (mc), or SAMBA/CIFS clients (Win OS or Mac OS X or other Linux) to move your data around. As for the formatting of the data drives, they need to have a single partition beginning on sector 63 containing reiserfs. If you're a novice, it's best to let the management console do this for you or use the exceptional user-contributed addon unMenu.
May 28, 201016 yr Hi, I am planning on building my first unRaid setup once all my hardware arrives. I have I few question before: 1. I have one full 1TB HDD that I want to use as is in the setup - can I add it and keep the data? how? The only way it can be added is if it is already only has a single partition starting on sector 63 and extending to the full size of the drive AND The partition has a reiser file system on it. If not, you'll need to use a different drive or copy the data elsewhere. If you attempt to add it to the array if it has an NTFS file-system it will be considered as foreign, and completely re-partitioned/re-formatted as I described above. 2. Can I later move some of the data from this HDD to a new additional HDD inside the setup? How? You can easily mount and copy from other rives to the ones in the protected array. See the WIKI for details. How should I format the new drives? what file system? No need to format anything, the unRAID management console will do it all for you. If you do decide to format it yourself, you can only add it by using the "initconfig" command prior to starting the array, otherwise it will be cleared anyway. If you wish, there is a add-on shell script that will clear and partition the drives before you add then to the array. It writes zeros to the entire disk, so again, you must move your data elsewhere first. Thank you,
