Unraid Freezes when Ripping from Windows 7

Featured Replies

I have been using Unraid for several years without any problems until about 6 months ago when I converted the PC in my home theater to Windows 7.  Ever since then, whenever I rip a movie to my Unraid Server, at some point the Unraid system crashes.  Sometimes it is the first movie being ripped, sometime it might be the second or third.  I have tried everything.  Memory tests, hard drive checks, replacement hard drives, setting up a cache drive. I even built a new unRaid server.  I've modified the registry in the Windows 7 machine to improve copy speeds.  Last week, I came across an article that said that Windows 7 has been known to cause Samba machines on a network to crash.  I made the changes to the Windows 7 machine called for in that article with no luck. My system is as follows:

Supermicro Motherboard-X7SLM with Intel Celeron 1.8 GHZ LGA775 single core processor and 2GB memory

SAS3141B SAS/SATA Backplane

Supermicro PCI-E AOC-SASLP-MV8

Harddrives shown on attached screen shot

I am attaching the Syslog from this afternoon when the system crashed again.  I don't know a lot about Linux and the only time I have to work on this problem is the weekends, and this problem has been all consuming.  I hope someone can help.

When you say unRAID crashes, what is the crash?

Does it stop working, is the a hardware lockup where you cannot do anything? Does the screen respond?

Have you tried ripping locally then using something like teracopy to move it?

The system locks down, can't enter anything on the command line, have to reboot.  I have used Teracopy and have considered what you suggest as an alternative, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if and why doing it that way would make any difference if I'm copying from the same Windows 7 machine.

I don't have the answers, but if your unraid server is locking up hard.

I.E. you can only recover by a power cycle or pressing the reset key, then it is a hardware issue on the unRAID side.

Power supply, network driver issue. Sata interface/driver issue.

using teracopy my only bandaid the situation.

I.E. a slower or more controlled copy may get through easier.

The use of this card alone Supermicro PCI-E AOC-SASLP-MV8 suggest that it is a recent build of unRAID.

I'm not saying this is the issue, but an immature driver somewhere that gets flooded with lots of data could cause hard locks.

As we're seeing with power supplies to.

You may need to describe your system more, PSU, Drive layout and upload a syslog file.

The teracopy suggesting is only to control the copy better.

Thank you very much for your input.  So it looks like my problem is hardware related.  To answer your question, my power supply is an Antec EA-750.  I am reattaching a screen shot of my drives and the syslog I attached last night.  Any further input would be appreciated.

I've modified the registry in the Windows 7 machine to improve copy speeds

(a) You did modifiction before you have this issue or after?

(b) exactly what you had done in modifying registry?

Win7 shouldn't be an issue since i am also using it in one of my machines and i use teracopy

to copy data from this win7 machine to my unraid without any problem even large BD ISO files

your syslog doesn't show something interesting as far as i can tell

I do not believe the power supply is the issue.

Thanks for your suggestions.  I was experiencing this problem long before I made any changes to the registry. Just changed the Dword in the Lanman Workstation Settings.  Today, I've updated the bios on my motherboard and that didn't fix the problem.  All that leaves me is to update the bios on the Sata Card, but I'm not sure which files to use from the installation disk.  There are several linux drivers included.  I read a post on the forum that talked about how to update the bios and the link to the firmware for the card was for Windows.  I am now wondering if that is my problem...the SAS card's firmware is for Windows and not Linux.  Any additional help is welcomed!  Thanks again for taking the time.
