No IP address is assigned by DHCP server...

Featured Replies

Hi!

This is the first time i try to setup an unRAID Server so I hope you'll be patient  ;) I build up a new computer using an Asus M4A785T-M mainboard with an onboard Realtek 8112L PCIe Gigabit LAN controller. The NIC is connected to my router which is used as a DHCP server but not IP address is assigned to the unRAID server. If I type ifconfig the following message appears:

eth0   Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr  e0:cb:4e:ab:c5:ee

        up broadcast multicast   MTU:1500  Metric:1

        rx packets:0 errors: 0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

        tx packets:0 errors:0  dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

        collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

        rx bytes:0 (0.0 b)    tx bytes:0  (0.0  b)

        interrupt:26 base address:0x4000

lo        link encap:local loopback

         inet addr:127.0.0.1    mask:255.0.0.0

         up loopback running   mtu:16436   metric:1

         rx packets:0  errors:0   dropped:0  overruns:0  frame:0

         tx packets:0  errors:0  dropped:0   overruns:0  carrier:0

         collisions:0  txqueuelen:0

         rx bytes:560  (560.0  b)    tx  bytes:560  (560.0  b)

As you can see no IP address is assigned. So I've tried to set an IP by myself by changing the network.cfg file but this does not work either.

So I believe there could be an issue with the NIC driver? If I type "lsmod":

root@Tower:~# lsmod

Module                  Size  Used by

md_mod                 37868  0

xor                        12825 1 md_mod

atiixp                  1768 0

ahci                    27189   0

r8169                  27628   0

I assume r8169 is the driver for the Realtek NIC but I'm not sure if this is the correct driver since I use a 8112L chip and not a 8169.

I also attached the syslog.txt file hopefully you will find any issues during boot and can help me to solve the problem.

I've tried to search the forum for any help but I couldn't find a solution that worked for.

Thanks for help.

p.s. Sorry for my poor English skills but it's not my first language :)

syslog.txt

when you login can you see any contents of the /boot directory?

The reason I ask is I had the same problem earlier and it was because it couldn't read the contents of the /boot directory where the config files are.

When that happened I had to create a new flash drive. Meaning I had to copy the files to the flash drive and try again.

When I login an type ls /boot I got a list of the following files:

bzimage*  config/    license.txt*  menu.c32*  syslinux.cfg*

bzroot*    ldlinux.sys*  memtest*    readme.txt*

So I think that is working pretty fine. There must be another reason for my problem.

Your syslog shows no link detected.

Does your motherboard have more than one either-net connector?  Perhaps you have the cable in the one it is not using?

Or, it could be the cable itself, or the port on the router.

many ether-net connectors have indicator lights built into them.  Do yours?  Are they let? If so, how?

My motherboard only have one ethernet connector, the cable works fine with other PCs and I've installed Windows 7 an my unRAID server to test the new components before I used it with unRAID software and the nic worked petty fine under Windows 7 with the same cable and port of the router.

The connector has two lights a green and a orange. When unRAID is running only the orange light is flashing every now and then.

Then it sounds as if it does not have the proper driver for your chipset.

According to this thread the motherboard should work fine with unRAID: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5909.0

Then I'd try another cable or port on the router.

Are you using the same version of unRAID as the person in that other post?

No I used 4.5.4 and now 4.5.5. I've tried another cable and a different port on the router but it's still not working.

I will reinstall Windows 7 on this computer maybe the NIC is defect and is not longer working even if it did before.

Ok I activated a function called "check LAN cable" in BIOS and now I got an IP in unRAID and I can login the webif using my browser.

But that doesn't really make sense because this function is disabled by default maybe it's just a coincidence and there is still a problem with the nic itself. According to the manual this option enables or disables checking the Realtek LAN cable during the POST. Doesn't sound very important.

I will reboot the PC several times and check if an IP is assigned.

I've rebooted the server several times now with different cables and different ports at my router and gigabit switch and for some reason it works fine now. An IP is assigned every time although I don't really know why.

Anyway, thanks for the help  :)
