May 13, 200719 yr I've finally got my setup to boot (had to get a compatible USB flash drive). Here's my config: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (Rev. 1.0), 1x300GB SATA, 2x250GB SATA. The system boots and I can access UNRAID through the web console, but when I go to the devices page, I can only see two drives at a time. I set the 300GB drive (plugged into SATA 0 slot) as the parity drive. The disk1 device I can set to the 250GB drive which I have plugged into the SATA 1 slot. The second 250GB drive doesn't show up as an option in the drop down list so I can't assign it to disk2. I tried swapping around the SATA ports to see if I could get all the drive to show up, but I can only get two of the drives to show up as options in the drop down list at a time. All three drives are detected during boot-up. I'm not sure why UNRAID isn't showing them as options. Any ideas? I'm planning on upgrading so I can add more drives, but if my mobo somehow doesn't support more than two drives under UNRAID, I might have to rethink that. Thanks in advance.
May 13, 200719 yr For unRAID basic, the Devices page should have 3 drop down boxes: parity disk1 disk2 But all hard drives you have connected should be candidates for assignment. For example, suppose you have 5 hard disks. When you click on the parity drop down box, all 5 should show up in the list. Suppose you assign one of them and now select the disk1 drop down list. Now 4 drives should show up in the list. And so forth. Are you saying you don't see 'disk2' on the Devices page, or that you don't see all three of your disks in a drop down box? If the latter, please post back your syslog.
May 14, 200719 yr Author It's the latter. It appears that only the two drives that get plugged into SATA 0 or 1 ports are detected by unRAID, and mounted as hda and hdc respectively. For whatever reason, if I plug a drive into any of the other 4 SATA ports, although they are detected during boot-up by the bios, they are not loaded into unRAID. Therefore, only two drives are showing up in the dropdown list. I can't find a good way to transfer the entire syslog--copy and paste misses the first part of the log. I can pipe to a file and read it using vi, but I don't know a good way to get the file from Tower to my PC so I can post it. I guess this must be a motherboard that isn't supported?
May 14, 200719 yr Author After reading a bit more on the forum, I think that my south bridge may not be supported. The motherboard uses the Intel ICH8 chipset. Is this something that may be supported by unRAID 4.0? Is there a way for me to verify that my mobo will be compatible before purchasing unRAID? BTW, thanks for getting back to me earlier today and trying to help me out. I also figured out that I can just pipe the syslog to more and copy and paste by the page, but since I think I know what's wrong, I won't do that right now.

Are you testing using unraid 3.0, or 4.0? unRaid 4.0-final is available and might solve your problem as ICH8 support does exist in it. (what motherboard are you using?) See here for description of 4.0 release and link to download folder: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=698.from0#new Joe L.

See here for description of 4.0 release and link to download folder: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=698.from0#new Joe L. I'm testing using the free download, which is 3.0. Can I test using the 4.0 release? I was under the impression that I needed to have purchased a license in order to use the 4.0 software. I'm hoping that unRAID 4.0 will let me use this mobo to set up a file server, but don't want to purchase until I'm sure it'll work. Mobo is Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (Rev. 1.0).
May 14, 200719 yr Hmmm. I thought it was just the reverse....it's free for up to 3 drives whichever release you want to use.
May 15, 200719 yr You can trial any of the 4.0 builds. Just go into the Announcements section and Tom has a thread for each build and in the first post there is a download link. Your best bet would be to try 4.0 Final.

Your best bet would be to try 4.0 Final. if you already have calculated parity on your existing drives follow the "upgrade" instructions. it might save a few minutes... I expect Tom will update his main web-site to point to the 4.0 release soon... he probably just forgot about it having a direct link.

May 15, 200719 yr Author Thanks for info, everybody. I'll try out version 4.0 tonight. I wasn't sure whether 4.0 also allowed a free trial. I'll report back on my results.
May 15, 200719 yr Author unRAID 4.0 worked like a charm. My drives were all recognized and now I'm formatting/parity-syncing. Sweet.
