Shares Best Practice

Yea, understanding split level and the fact that a disk can be excluded from a user share but still get files based on the split level is important to understand. The included disks only come into play when writing and there is no split level match.

For tv shows shares, you can use something like most free. That will result in new TV shows going to the disk with the most free space. But with the split level set properly, new episodes of tv shows are steered to the disks containing that show.

I know this reply is 5 years old, but does this still apply in the current version of unraid?

I am looking to optimize my server, to minimize disk spin ups. So I am creating a tv share (even though I will lose hard-linking I guess), then the share will be

tv/series/season/

If I use a split level of 1, with Most Free, this will allow new shows to be put on the disk with the most space, but keep continuing series on the same disk?

It just wasn't clear what @SSD said, in that "if the split level is set correctly". I don't want to assume what he meant by that, in terms of using it alongside "most free".

IVe read that linked guide so many times but I'm just an idiot. So I thought I'd ask

If you just want reaffirmation, yes, what was said is true. I say this based on validating each of those statements against the linked documentation. The specific points / caveats being made have been specifically noted down in documentation. some relevant parts

Unraid will first check the included disks(s) set and then the Excluded disk(s) set when deciding which disk to place a file on. Then, Unraid will use the split level and allocation method to pick a disk which is allowed to hold the file.

IMPORTANT: in the event of there being contention between the various settings for a share over which array drive to select for a file the Split Level setting always takes precedence. This means the Allocation Method and Minimum Free Space settings end up being over-ridden. This can mean unRAID chooses a drive which does not have enough space for the file so that an out-of-space error subsequently occurs for the file.

As always, best to test and validate when you set things up fresh :)

yes, as long as it is a brand new series that does not yet exist on any array disk already

Most Free

This is the least efficient Allocation method. Highwater will use multiple disks eventually without constantly switching disks simply because a disk temporarily has more free than another.
