UPS for Unraid (what software?)

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I finally created my unRaid server and everything is working very well. Now I'm trying to figure out how to complete the build adding a good UPS. I read a lot about UPS for server ecc, but i can't understand what UPS will be compatible with unRaid. I read that unRaid uses apcupsd, that is an APC software modded for Linux.

During my search for a good UPS I find these two:

1)   http://www.atlantisland.it/download/SCHEDATECNICA/A03-OP1000-RC_(v2-1)_SE.pdf

The first one use a software called:   Upsilon2K (V5.0) Multi (Win-Linux-MAC OS X-NetWare)

2)   http://www.atlantisland.it/download/SCHEDATECNICA/A03-OP2301_1-1_SE.pdf

The second one use a software called:   ViewPower  and have different OS versions:   ViewPower(2.14)[Linux(64-bit)], ViewPower(2.14)[Linux(32-bit)], ViewPower(V2.14)[Win2K-2003-XP-Vista-2008-2012-7-8-10]

Anyone know about these two Atlantis UPS or about these 2 softwares? They are compatible with the unRaid OS? Or is better to stick with an APC UPS like:  APC Power-Saving Back-UPS PRO 1500VA/865Watt   ?

Thank you really really much for all the help.

Much easier to stick with apc compatible signalling, it's possible you could get others to work using NUT, which is available as a plugin. There is no chance of using the provided software as is with unraid, you must use software that is hooked into unraid for proper shutdown.

I recommend using APC brand or another that is known working with apcupsd or nut.

I use a CyberPower Sinewave 1500va/900w - works perfectly with the native unRaid UPS settings.

It's great value compared to the APC units, and as the name describes, outputs 'true' sinewave power.

Also, unless you're running a very heavy gaming machine, you're not likely to need more than 1500va

(I run my full unRaid server with 20x HDD, a smaller headless desktop, a 'gaming' spec PC, 27in Monitor, A/V amp, and  all my networking equipment, and I rarely top 40% utilisation. Usually sits around 30% with everything on, and 20-25% when idling with the screen & amp off etc.

That will be great. I saw I can buy the CyberPower that you linked instead of the APC that I linked saving 50€.

I read that CyberPower is a very good brand like APC. Can you confirm it? I'm a newbie in the world of UPS.

The CyberPower Sinewave 1500va / 900w is sinewave online or a normal sinewave? I mean, it has the dual conversion, or it has the normal straight line with a switcher on the battery?

Do you know how many years it lasts before you need a battery change?

Thank you very much for the infoes.

Keep in mind that some cyberpower models (unknown if any work properly) do NOT support all the functions, it will signal the power outage to unraid properly, but will not shut itself down if configured to do so in the settings, and can produce undesired effects if that option is set. Otherwise it works as intended.

Mmmm ok, so the true best way is going with any APC ups to have a 100% support ecc. Any model of APC have 100% compatibility?

Because the control software that is in use on unraid isn't authored by APC, it's not a 100% sure bet that APC will work, but most will. I would search the specific model you are looking at combined with apcupsd as the search terms to find either success or failure examples.

Like I said, cyberpower works fine, as long as you don't try to use the powerdown function. I personally have a cyberpower on one of my servers, but I hardly ever have power issues. If you have frequent power outages, I'd be shopping on the higher end, and be more concerned with total AH of battery capacity instead of focusing on price.

I know it sounds like I'm sending mixed messages on APC vs cyberpower, but it really depends on your specific circumstances. I just wanted you to be aware that not all UPS's function equally when used with unraid.
