flappination Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Hello, I am currently looking to build a new computer. I have experimented with unraid in the past and successfully setup my current build with two windows 10 vms and two gtx 980s in passthrough. My current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/flappination/saved/4nwbjX VM 1: 2 cores / 2 threads / 15 GB ram VM 2: 1 core / 2 threads / 15 GB ram unRaid: 1 thread / 2 GB ram I was relatively happy with these results, but I did revert back to just a normal pc because I was running everything off of a slow 7200tb hard drive (just testing things out). Another problem was that my current build is only a quad core and isn't really ideal for this type of setup, hence the new build. I'm contemplating either going with an unraid setup to consolidate two computers into one or just purchase a new pc on the Z370 platform and let my girlfriend use my old pc for light games / browsing (extreme overkill build). Without further ado, here is what i'm looking for: Primary Use Cases Development (Web / Unity 3D Game Development) Gaming ( GTX 980 ) on two VMs Possibly down the road, Plex - I already have a Synology NAS running Plex Build Option 1 - Build a new pc and let the girlfriend use my current build https://pcpartpicker.com/user/flappination/saved/XKkZ8d Estimated cost: $1754 Build Option 2 - i7-7820X https://pcpartpicker.com/user/flappination/saved/LqDsJx Estimated cost: $1704 Minus current build: ~ $500 Total Estimated Cost: $1204 Build Option 3 - i7-7900X https://pcpartpicker.com/user/flappination/saved/ZFxvVn Estimated cost: $2083 Minus current build: ~ $500 Total Estimated Cost: $1584 As you can see both unRaid builds come in cheaper than just building a new system and keeping (vs selling) my old system. I have been doing a lot of reading and I still have some questions... Has anyone here done the "2 gamers 1 cpu" build for a long period of time (several years) and have they ran into any issues? Would you go for the X299 platform right now or wait (likely until 2019)? Considering the new "i7 9700k" will be 8 core processors Would you recommend anything different in the builds? Also just FYI this is how I plan on setting it up: VM 1: 4 cores / 4 threads (or 6 cores / 6 threads if 7900x) 15GB ram 500GB 960 evo nvme ssd as primary disk VM 2: 3 cores / 3 threads 15GB ram 500GB 860 evo as primary disk unRaid: 1 core / 1 thread 1 GB ram 32GB SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 as primary disk 2 TB WD Black + 1 TB WD Black pooled for extra storage to the 2 VMs
flappination Posted March 5, 2018 Author Posted March 5, 2018 Due to many sources, https://lime-technology.com/forums/topic/55235-632-win-10-wm-steam-issue/ https://lime-technology.com/forums/topic/56724-could-unraid-cause-problems-with-vac/ https://www.reddit.com/r/VFIO/comments/67motk/csgo_blocking_vm_gamers_and_why_we_shouldnt_be/ https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2117-ILZV-2837 I'm worried that the blocking of hypervisors will become prevalent across more anti-cheat software and not just Valve Anti-Cheat. I likely will not go the unRaid route due to this, unless someone can prove this has been / will be fixed. I was unable to find anything.

I have not run in to any of the above problems on my 2 VM's which I have played CS:GO, and many other Steam games on.
flappination Posted March 12, 2018 Author Posted March 12, 2018 Thanks, i'm glad to hear that is the case! Regardless I ended up going with a different option, I upgraded my current PC's processor, ram, and motherboard and then built the girlfriend a new entry level PC and through in one of my graphics cards in it. Ended up costing me the same as it would have if I built an unRaid rig. I went this route simply because of time. I think it would be a lot of fun to learn more and use unRaid but I just don't have the time currently as i'm working 7 days a week, 8-12 hour days. I'll probably be looking into unRaid again in the future
