Network problems

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm trying to install unRAID server on a machine of a friend. I have some problems with the NIC. The motherboard has a onboard NIC which is disabled. We add a Intel® PRO/1000GT. The error displayed when unRAID is booting:

/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf: line 18: /boot/config/network.cfg: no such file or directory

/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf: line 19: /var/tmp/network.cfg: no such file or directory

- When i do ifconfig there is no output.

- When i check if the driver is loaded with lsmod output:

e1000

atiixp

ahci

so the driver is loaded(Intel® PRO/1000GT).

- when i check ethtool eth0

It says it has no link (strange). I checked this with two different utp cables. The two cables are both working on a other computer.

Please some help.

if you put the usb flash drive on another machine, do you see drive:\config folder and is there a network.cfg file in that folder?

think you need to check into that and why it can't find the network.cfg file on the usb flash drive. once you get that resolved, your "network" problems may disappear

Yes, i checked the network.cfg file.

# Generated network settings
USE_DHCP=yes
IPADDR=
NETMASK=
GATEWAY=

I think these settings are alright or not?

When unraid has boot and gave the errors as mention above. Then i'm checking /boot/config/network.cfg or /var/tmp/network.cfg there is no network.cfg file.

Are there any files under /boot ??

If not, odds are the flash drive did not get mounted at /boot

The usual reason for this is you did set the volume label of the flash drive to UNRAID  (6 letters, all CAPITAL) when in the window's PC.

unRAID uses the volume label to properly mount the drive.

Meanwhile i'm at home again. I took the usb drive with me to test on my system. Now it is getting weird its not booting on my system.

I have to mention this a 8GB USB drive. The only option i have is to format it FAT32. It was booting onto the system of my friend.

My USB drive is 4GB and formated with FAT. I dont know of this make any difference?

Of there are any files under /boot i can't check right now. My friend lives half hour driving from here. I'll check when i'm there.

The USB drive is labeled as UNRAID.

Well, I can chime in with the same problem.

I prepared my usb flash according to instructions (a 4 Gb Lexar Jumpdrive) and chucked it into my unRAID server in spe. It booted readily and brought me to the login prompt.

However, it didn't get an IP and after reading a couple of threads on the subject I became aware that the flash wasn't mounted. Ok, I might have screwed something up. So I tried preparing it again, doublechecking volume name, arguments, directory structure - everything followed to the letter. Tried rebooting the server - still no cigar, the flash drive wasn't mounted  :'(

Then I took a 512 Mb flashdrive (some no-name giveaway from a conference) and prepared that - and lo and behold, it worked right away  :o

I'm pretty baffled by the fact that the type of flashdrive can have any impact on whether it is mounted or not. Apparently I can't go by an instinct that Lexar products on the whole are fit for this use.

Any insights?

A lot depends on your flash drive's geometry and your BIOS ability to deal with it and the file-system type you use when you format it.    The HP formatting tool mentioned in the wiki is often needed to set the geometry to one usable by unRAID.  Of course, it is often easier to just try a different flash drive.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer!

I had read about that, but I thought it only related to the ability too boot. So are you saying the Lexar Jumpdrive might be made to work by formatting it using the HP tool? Even though 4 Gb seems to be the entry level flash drive these days, is 4 Gb even relevant? Or would 512 Mb be ample space? As I am new to unRAID I have no idea how much space might be relevant when it comes to add-ons :-)

If I am never going to exceed 512 Mb or 1 Gb I might just as well rummage through my belongings to find a brand name flash drive and use that (even though my prior notion of brand name = quality has suffered during the last 24 hours, hehe)

I have now formatted the 4 Gb Lexar using the HP Tool. Didn't make any difference :-(
