RAM, 1x2Gb or 2 x 1Gb, Which one should it be? & HDD Jumpers

Featured Replies

My components have arrived, but I have a few questions about the RAM and putting jumpers on HDD

AMD Athlon X2 255 (overkill I know, but it was on special)

Asus M4A88TD-M

Corsair CX-400

Antec 300 Case

WD 20EARS-00MVWB0  2TB x 2

Kingston KVR1333D3N9/2G RAM x 1 stick

I actually ordered 2x1Gb RAM however have received the above, will this be OK? As I remember reading that the RAM needs to run in dual channel?

Also, there are no jumpers supplied, is this what I need?

Thanks

yes and yes.

Looksup memory support for this MB from following link

you can find those jumpers at local computer store as well.

Ok, thanks,

on the compatibilty page it says, just wanted to be sure, before I stuff up!

'Recommend 2 equal sticks of 512MB or 1GB or 2GB in order to run in dual-channel mode; speed matched to the FSB of your CPU.

unRAID will run in 512MB just fine for normal serving of media files. If you plan on running add-on applications that use a lot of memory, 1GB, 2GB, or more, is better.'

maybe it should read, '.....2 equal sticks of 512MB or 1 stick of either 1GB or 2GB.......'

That is only if you want to run in dual-channel mode and some MB with DDR2 might have issue if you only have one DIMM.

yours is DDR3 and the memory configuration of this MB on ASUS web site does indicate ONE DIMM is also fine for this Kingston

Most mobos should work with a single stick.  However, dual channel does require two sticks - if you run single channel mode there may be a small performance hit (probably not significant in a simple unRAID setup).

I actually recommend larger, single sticks of RAM as opposed to smaller, multiple sticks.  There is a small performance different between single channel and dual channel, but it really doesn't matter in the unRAID environment.  With a single 2 GB stick you can easily upgrade later by adding a second stick without having to replace one (assuming you have only 2 DIMM slots).
