If running virtual machines or some more interesting Dockers, then the SSD would definitely give much needed extra speed.

 

If used as a NAS with just larger files, then a HDD would manage quite well, unless you happen to have a 10 gbit/s network interface.

 

The real advantage of the SSD isn't the higher transfer rates, but the almost non-existing seek times. So a SSD can jump constantly between multiple files and still manage a high transfer rate, while the HDD transfer speed drops very quickly the more seeks that are needed.
