Swapping current unraid server setup to another usb stick

Featured Replies

I'm giving some thought to swapping over to one of the recommended USB stick you have listed as the one i used is a ebay wristband generic one. It does have a serial guid so it would work ok to register it as far as i know, but i don't want to register and be stuck using an older stick.

I'm finding the server takes a while to boot off my current 256mb old stick so might try to use a Cruzer 4GB i have instead. It is as simple as copying the data from one stick to another, after doing the syslinux.exe bit??

Also once registered, are you then tied to that USB stick?? I was thinking of registering today but no point if it means i can't change my usb stick. My problem is now i'm up and running i'd like to start copying stuff across so i'd like to have the option of using a cache disk :)

If you haven't registered yet then yes, all you have to do is copy the contents of one flash drive to the other (after doing the syslinux bit as you mentioned).

Once you register you are more-or-less tied to that flash drive.  If the drive dies you can contact LimeTech and they will issue you a new key.  However, I haven't heard of any other reason for switching flash drives.

I use an old generic 1 GB stick that I recovered from a lost'n'found drawer at an old job.  Definitely not the most reliable way to obtain a drive, but it has worked steadily for over a year.

In that case i think i'll quickly test the data rate of the older stick to see if the Cruzer is a little quicker, then unless theres a decent amount in it i'll stick to the old 256mb stick.

Then tomorrow i'll look at sorting the registration out and get the cache disk sorted - got a 300GB drive just dying to be used :)

256mb stick?  Guess you run (almost at least) strict vanilla unRAID.

Any thought in the future of using add-ons?

What is the footprint of V5? (think I read somewhere it'll grow from present)

Might want to consider the future.  Wouldn't want to box yourself in at the beginning since you haven't registered yet.

Just a thought.

I would try to use at least a 2GB stick if you are setting it up now.

I run my main system with a Pro key on a 1GB stick and would not want to go with a smaller key.  My test system is set up on an 8GB stick and is currently running the free version of unRAID.  I need to get pro installed on my test server so i have a fully featured system to test with.

I didn't really realise the usb stick side would grow all that much. I've got unraid 4.5 and unmenu on it at the moment. I have to admin its difficult to say how much it will grow or add-on's be used as i've only had it running two days and don't really know much about it and its possibilities - Also anyone who seen most of my posts do far i'm no linux pro

I'll look to use my 4GB Cruzer than i think. Got a quick reply on my shutdown thread so i'm good to test it tomorrow...
