Need help with memory compatibility: Supermicro X8SIL-F / Hynix 4GB

Ok i'm not sure the memory i selected is going to be compatible.

I bought all my components from scan.co.uk and looking at the tested list hynix seemed to show a fair bit, so thought i'd be fairly safe with that.

I'm getting the x8sil-f motherboard.

This is a link to compatibility http://www.supermicro.co.uk/products/Memory/3400_support.cfm?pname=MBD-X8SIL-F&DIMM=4

This is a link to the memory http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-Hynix-ServerMemory-DDR3-PC3-8500-(1066MHz)-240-Pin-Registered-CAS-7-7-7

I went for a single 4GB ECC Registered module because it was cheaper than 2 x 2GB ECC Registered modules.

But looking at that compatibility chart i can't work out if the module will be compatible.  The module appears to be 1Gb (x8 DRAM), the table only mentions 4GB DIMMs under Quad Rank, no idea what this means?

Any one have a clue if this is going to be compatible?

It wont work as the chips are x4

Hynix module naming datasheet:

Hope it will help you find another one - something to look for is  - instead of "AFP4C" you should look for "letter1, letter2,P8C" - the number 8 been the key factor in assuring compatibility with this SM board.

This is the list with their registered modules:

http://www.hynix.com/products/module/module_sub.jsp?menuNo=1&m=1&s=1&menu3=01&RK=20&SK=RD&RAM_NAME=DDR3%20SDRAM&SUB_RAM=1GB&SUB_RAM1=2GB&SUB_RAM2=

Why are you using Registered memory - you plan on populating every slot in the near future?

The regular unbuffered ECC DDR3 ram should not cost much more than the plain vanila DDR3.

So i would need something like 2 x of this then? http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/2GB-Hynix-Server-Memory-DDR3-PC3-8500-(1066MHz)-240-Pin-ECC-Unbuffered-CAS-7-7-7

Whats the difference between registered and unbuffered? It seems on scan the unbuffered memory is x8 and the registered is x4

Yes this one appears to be made with x8 chips so it should work in theory. (I do not have experience with SM boards and the general public opinion is that they are very "picky")

On the question - there is wikipedia.com and on more serious note www.rampedia.com  ;)

Well i dont think scan stock any of the tested modules, and of the manufacturers listed they only have hynix (the tested list includes micron, samsung, hynix and crucial, they stock hynix, corsair and supermicro, but they have zero details on the supermicro modules and they are more expensive).

I'm finalizing the shopping cart for my first project and very probably will also go for the X8SIL-F. I believe you are about to boot up your server with this mobo, congrats! Memory modules are still open on my list. Did you buy server grade memory, 2x2GB or 1x4GB? Would be grateful if you would be willing to share your experience.
