Tybio
Hey all, So I'm in the good position of having to make a simple choice with no $ associated. I have a spare LSI 8 port card (PCIE3.0) and a motherboard with 8 SATA ports on board. I know years ago it was best practice to move from motherboard ports as they were often low quality controllers. I'm wondering if things have moved on? The C246 chipset I'm using is a workstation chipset, so I'd imagine that the storage subsystem is high quality....and I'm wondering if it is as simple as this: If you want a cleaner install, use the LSI for nice cable runs (less cables over all) If you want to expand later, use the on-board controller so you leave one 8x slot free Are there other considerations that I'm missing? JorgeB
Intel SATA onboard controller is one of the best controllers you can use, and always has been, LSI HBAs are also good, except for SSDs since trim won't work on most. Quote Link to comment
Tybio
Thanks for the advice Johnnie, I setup the new server with 1xLSI card and using 8xon-board. It is rebuilding that failed disk a good clip and I have one less power draw in the system! Quote Link to comment
