Build for NAS and VMs

Recommended Posts

Hi unRAID Community,

I'm new to unRAID and need pointing in the right direction.

I've just purchased all new equipment for a dream build to support various home uses including NAS, Docker and VMs. I downloaded the latest OS (unRAID 6.6.6), fired up the basic setup as a quick precursor to getting everything installed in the chassis case to have a quick look at the various menu settings etc (up to this point i had never loaded or used unRAID).

I clicked on the VM Manager menu item as was presented with....my hardware doesnt support VMs....

heart sank feeling aside, I rechecked my hardware - the cpu (Core i7-8700K) and motherboard bios say Intel Virtualization is supported; both Intel Virtualization Technology VT-x & VT-d say are supported by the CPU and ASUS mb says virtualization is enabled. so I'm now stuck - hopefully someone can tell me I'm doing something wrong as I've invested heavily in the hardware as I wanted to build a top end unRAID rig.

Thanks in advance,

My setup is:

i7-8700K on Asus ROG STRIX Z390-I ITX motherboard,

32Gb RAM, 2x M.2 Drives (Cache), 4x 10Tb Drives (Data), 32Gb USB (Boot)

Is there a bios update available?

I'm currently away from home so cannot check the exact version but looking at ASUS website, it appears there's a BIOS version dated 2018/11/30 (Version 1003) - seems very recent so doubt the mb has that by default - I will check tonight - I hope that sorts it, thanks for the prompt response.
