VM only server

Featured Replies

I'm thinking about splitting my current server/main pc into two since power gets much more expensive in germany.

Beside a low power consumption server, which will run pfsense vm, a lot of dockers and stores most of my data, I definitely need a little bit more power in a second pc which wouldn’t run 24/7. This pc should be able to run windows, linux and macOS.

So I came to the following idea:

I put the unraid usb flash drive into my separate usb pcie extension card and also insert a second flash drive into it as “array”, because I guess I need at least one “disk” for running VMs even if I would passthrough disks directly instead of images on an array.

That way I would be able to passthrough nearly everything (especially SATA and all USB ports without of course the pcie card) to my VMs.

Should that work? Or will it be problematic to run unraid from an separate usb card instead from internal usb ports?

Depends on the motherboard BIOS. Some older boards had problems booting from anything besides the on board controller, but most modern boards should be ok.
