Remote Access to Unraid?

Featured Replies

Is there any way to access my unraid server remotely?

Would be really nice to be able to access my documents through the internet.

I suspect the answer is "yes".  Check on the Internet for software that allow you to establish a connection with your PC at home (PCanywhere, for example) - - assuming, of course, that your PC has access to your unRAID server.

Any way to access it directly?

My guess is "not yet", and that FTP or similar is being worked on for future releases?

Yes, you can.  Please note, that if you do this, ANYONE can then connect to your unRAID box as there is no security on unRAID out of the box.

Assuming you have a broadband router, you can set up a "DMZ" computer in that router's config.  Set up the IP address of the unRAID box as the DMZ computer.  Now all incoming connections to your router from the outside Internet will be forwarded to the unRAID box.

Then, get the IP address of your router, that was assigned by your ISP (i.e. cable or DSL provvider).  That should also be displayed somewhere in the router config.  Note that address.

Then from another location, anywhere in the world, you can map a drive back to unRAID by maping the drive using the IP address of your router... so if the IP address is 78.22.101.30 you put this string in the "map network drive" dialog in Windows, in the "folder" field:

\\78.22.101.30\disk1

You can also get to the unRAID interface with a browser:

http://78.22.101.30

You can telnet to it:

telnet 78.22.101.30

You get the idea.

Now you can use port forwarding instead of DMZ and that will be a little more secure, and you can open only specific ports (Samba) but not the HTTP interface.  That's a little more complex.

If it was me, I'd install wither FTP or NFS, and create secure logins, before I'd let my unRAID be accessible from the Internet.

ALSO, your IP address can (and does) change.  You should check it and see how long you keep the same IP address... most people find that they keep the same IP address from their ISP for weeks at a time.... for some, it changes every couple of days.  YMMV.

Yeah there is a way, there's home router/gateways that have VPN's now days.

here's a few examples

Or VPN + SSL

I use the linksys VPN wifi/ap/gw but i dont recommend and others i know use the above without issues.

Once you VPN using the client software from the respective equipment maker, you can browse your home network as if you are connected inside your homes firewall/router.

This method also does not expose your Nas to everyone on the internet.
