July 18, 20196 yr Please move tread if in wrong place. I have client data that I want to backup (Archive) and put on a spare drive in unassigned devices. I have already copied the data. I put the drive as xfs, which I can change and recopy if needed. But I was wondering if there was a way to encrypt the drive to help protect the data. Is there an app that I have overlooked or something I need to do in a terminal (which I have never really messed with much) which I may have just have overlooked or just not found the right page... Mainly, I just need to encrypt a drive in unassigned devices. My plan is to encrypt the drive, copy the data over, put the drive in a static bag, put that in a vacuum seal bag and seal it, put that in a hard shell hard drive shipping container, Wrap that in bubble wrap, put that in a box, put the box in a bank safety deposit box. Then do another one the same way to send it to my brother in another state and have him put it in a bank there. Am I missing anything? Thanks in advance for any advice... P.S. Yes I know it's possible overkill and I know people are going to probably make fun if everything. But if anything happens and I loose the clients backup data, my butt is on the line, not everyone else...
July 19, 20196 yr Community Expert As far as I know it is not possible to encrypt the drive and keep it's contents intact. It needs to be done at the format stage before copying data to the drive. A different possibility is to store the data in a archive format (e.g. zip/rar) which is password protected. This might be more convenient and avoids the need for the drive itself to be encrypted? July 19, 20196 yr Author Thanks for the reply. I can format the drive and recopy the data. I don't mind. As far as zipping the data, I wouldn't mind, but I have had issues with zipping large folders and being corrupt when unzipping. Some folders are 200+ gig. One folder is just alittle over 800gig. If there is a way to encrypt in the beginning, please let me know how. I would rather have the whole disk encrypted if possible. My only other option is to encrypt it on my workstation with bitlocker and copy 4.6tb over the network. Edited July 19, 20196 yr by Melocco
