November 1, 201015 yr After transfering most of my data from my old NAS, I've finally released the discs and have set up a cache drive as well as additional data drives. However, with over 1TB of data to transfer over from my main PC, I'm a little confused as to how the cache drive works. I've enabled the cache drive in user shares, but as I've been manually allocating data to disks, it seems that I'm bypassing the cache? Let me explain: "Movie Jukebox" is set to split level 2, and within this directory I've made "HD", "DVD" and "TV" folders. Within each disk I've made the same folder structure, so for example I've been dragging a dropping my HD files into the HD folders on individual disks. How then do I get the cache disk to work? The only thing I've been able to do so far is drag and drop the last 1TB of files directly into the cache share, which is giving me a respectable 60mbps transfer rate. How does the mover know, though, where to send those files at the scheduled time? Should these files being written to the cache drive be written to a folder structure which mirrors the array? i.e. Moviejukebox/HD? Does the mover then know to send the files at the alloted to time to Moviejukebox/HD and just use the parameters I've set in the user shares to allocate the files? i.e. split level 2, high water Thanks
November 1, 201015 yr it seems that I'm bypassing the cache? If you are copying directly to the disk share NOT a user share then the cache disk along with all the split level settings you are using are not used. The split level and those settings are only used when you are trying to write to a User Share How then do I get the cache disk to work? You have to write to a UserShare and not a disk share How does the mover know, though, where to send those files at the scheduled time? It does it based on folder name basically. It looks for a folder name that matches the one the file is currently in and then copies it across to the correct folder based on split level and the other settings. Should these files being written to the cache drive be written to a folder structure which mirrors the array? i.e. Moviejukebox/HD? YES, if you just copied them to the cache drive it will move them but they will end up all over the place. You need to organize them on the cache drive just like you did on the disk shares themselves. You are never really meant to copy to the cache drive directly, you are supposed to go through a UserShare. There are exceptions to this but we don't need to go there for now. Does the mover then know to send the files at the alloted to time to Moviejukebox/HD and just use the parameters I've set in the user shares to allocate the files? i.e. split level 2, high water Yes, assuming you have the files in there proper place the mover will move the content to the correct folder based on the settings you have set for that share.
