Passthrough existing RAID 5 to VM

Featured Replies

I am currently migrating my server over to UNRAID, and to completely new drives. My current setup is using Proxmox, with a RAID 5 passed through to an Ubuntu VM. I am just wondering if it is possible to connect up my RAID 5 to UNRAID and pass it through to an image of my Ubuntu VM to copy over to my new drives? Is it just a case of passing the four drives to the VM?

I would copy it over the network, but its 20TB of data and I am working to a tight deadline, so I figured doing it locally on the new server would probably be faster.

Cheers in advance!

Because of the way unraid uses parity with each drive being independent instead of striping, parity protected array write speeds are typically maxed out or close to it on gigabit ethernet. So, as long as your network is healthy gigabit, local isn't really going to be faster.

It may be possible to pass through the required hardware and access the RAID5 through a VM depending on your setup, but I wouldn't risk it. If you mess up something, you may end up accidentally nuking your RAID5.

Yeah that was my worry also, I guess going over the network is the safer method.

The initial plan was to connect them up to the same isolated router all running from a UPS just for safety. I guess we'll just have to do that. Going to be a long wait though!

Do you have any suggestions for the best way to transfer the data over the network?
