HDD Power Usage

You need to check the spec sheet of the HDD / SSD model because they do have a large variation.

Generally though:

  • HDD sleeps (spin down) at about 0.25W, idles at about 3-5W, operates at 4-8W and uses up to 20W while spinning up.
  • SSD sleeps at about 0.002W, idles at about 0.50W, operates at 2-6W

So if your HDDs are in spin down most of the time then the power usage diff would be rather insignificant.
