  1. Hello, I'm overly paranoid about the write limitations on an SSD (Its just the way I am) and to lessen the R&W load on them and the array, I want to setup a temp cache RAM disk for my camera system so that it can encode video then move it to the array after its done. The camera software is running on a Win10 VM, ideally I would like to have a RAM disk mounted to the VM. Just to say it my sever has about 256GB of free RAM currently when everything is running. I am not a linux person so maybe this is really easy, but can I create a 20GB Virtual disk in unraid so that I can mount it to a VM? Being that unraid is already in RAM having a command to create virtual disk in (for example) the temp dir on boot of unraid would be all that I need....I think?
  2. Hello, I am looking to see if anyone has some general real world power usage differences between using SSDs vs. HDD in Unraid. Mainly being that I run a simple 20 drive storage server and when not in us each HDD drive sleeps, would I see any real differences in usage upgrading to SSDs? Thank for the help
  3. Hello, So I have a good working setup with my 2 VMs, I am just wondering if there is a best practice on connecting VMs to shares on the array? Also is there a way to connect the VM to the array outside of using IP? I would like to be able to move the physical PC to a friends house or just not have it on a network and still have the VMs connected to the array. Thanks for the help
  4. Hello, So I happen to have a x399 1950x setup that I can play with and wanted to try setting up a few gaming VMs. After reading the forums here (thank you BTW) and think I know how I want to setup the CPU and MEM, but I dont really have a clear picture on the best why to setup storage. For example, if I have a STEAM Share can multipel VMs use it at the same time? I am planing if I can to have a m.2 dedicated to each VM OS, ether direct access or VM file created in each. What do other users do for game installation storage? Thank you for the help
  5. yep I am hopping to use 1.5m-2m 8088 cable to the box and then .5m from the expander to the bay.
  6. Hello, I want to add an external hard drive 4u enclosure to my Unraid here is the basic data cable conections: SAS HBA controller -> SAS expander -> SATA drives My question is from the controller to the expander can I go by SAS cable lengths or do I still have to go by SATA? I think the expander ups the signal to SAS standards but I am not to familiar with SAS and SATA aside from general information. Basic list of devices (not everything just the items for this part): LSI M1050 Controller Intel Res2cv360 Expander NORCO RPC-4220 Thanks for the help
  7. I am looking to segment what data goes through what group. So I want group A to be just Plex(Plugin) and Unraid, and group B to be VMs and Docker. So I don't know if I missed it in 6.3 but when I updated to 6.4 I found how to get the 2 separate bridges setup. KVM sees both bridges but docker only sees the one, also is there a setting to have Unraid NAS only use one group?
  8. Looks like you have two options with the information you gave. Add it to the array and you wont be able to see the fast write speeds you will see good read speeds on what ever files you store on it (You never said what files you are storing or if they require faster access). Or remove the disk and put it to better use in another system. Hope this helps
  9. Hello, I would like to segment my VMs & Docker from my Plex plugin & UnRaid. I have search before and have not found a clear way to do this with my setup. I know vary basic Linux commands, but give me some examples and I think I can figure it out. Knowing my luck its two easy commands and everything is good to go. I already have one pair of SPF+ 10gb lines setup in UnRaid to the Switch, and is working great. I would like to group my 4 extra Ethernet ports I have, and setup as a separate bridge. 1. How do a setup four NICs to Bond with 802.3ad Link Aggregation in the command line (GUI?)? 2. How do a setup a bridge to this group in the command line(GUI?) so Docker and KVM can see it? 3. How do I set priority for Unraid to use one bond over another? Sorry if this seems like a Noob question, just cant seem to figure out how to get this to work. Thank you in advance for any help you can give
  10. Was playing around with it just the other day and yes they are on different cores and I still have the sound issue.
  11. Hello, I am running multiple VMs in Unraid and was wondering if there was a way to prioritize one VM’s network traffic over another? Or limit the bandwidth to a VM? The main VM I am running on the server is a living room MC/Gaming VM and it works fine until the other VM’s start sending data (moving files to another PC on the network). When this happens my Plex audio will go out of sync with the video and I have to stop and start the movie to get everything working again. On a side note I am now running SFP+ 10Gbs to the server but I still had the problem when I was running Ethernet. Shouldn’t the increase in bandwidth help this from not happening? Thanks
  12. Wonderful, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing. I will look into the direct_io when I leave work Thank you
  13. Sorry its going Unraid to Unraid and from array share to array share. All HDD and I do not have cache drive setup right now.
  14. Sorry for the delay kids and the holidays take up alot of time. So I have the network setup and it looks like both Unraid servers are seeing the hardware just fine. All the other computers are seeing the server to. The problem I am now having is that if I am moving files from one server to the other (SMB mounted share) with MC I am only getting about 40MB/s. Am I missing something? Shouldn't it be faster then that?
  15. Found a good picture on the 8F model: http://www.servethehome.com/supermicro-x10sdv-7tp8f-high-end-xeon-d-platform/ Those ports are SFF-8643 so you will need to convert them to SFF-8087
  16. From looking at the specs on the motherboard I don't think the picture of the motherboard is correct. The specs say that it has 16x SAS2/SATA3 and 4x SATA3 ports which would tell me you would need 5 of the reverse cables. Supermicro's motherboards are great but there labeling of things are weird. Every time I have ordered a Supermicro MB there boxes are always showing the wrong MB. Also you might want to get the Norco case first before you get any accessories for it (120mm fan conversion, extra HD mount, wire length). I bought two 4220s and both have different mounting points, SFF8087 & power ports are in different location, and the wire management holes where different. Also depending on the placement of the SFF8087 and power ports it might be less stress on the cables to move the fans to the other side of the fan bracket. Just my 2 cents working with these cases.
  17. I have mixed different brands and speeds in systems in a pinch, and they have worked fine. I was told back in the day to make sure that at least each channel has the same ram, so same ram in same color slot. Speed would be adjusted to the slower sticks. This might have change over the years, so I might be wrong. Personally don't see much of a difference running non ECC slower memory vs the faster memory. I would just buy all new cheaper memory and have them all the same and throw the higher speed memory in a system that can use it.
  18. So it looks like I am going where no Unraid Geek has gone before.
  19. Hello, I have a vary loud switch that is running 6 30mm fans. I found that I can remove the fans and everything will still work but the fan error light will stay on all the time. My original plan was to mod the case and install 3 120mm fans with external power to keep everything cool and reduce how loud it is. But, I found out the stock fans run on the same volts and amps as the 120s so I could wire the new fans in to the switch and not use an external power source. My Question is, being that the switch will now have only 3 fans, can I split the RPM sensor on the fans to the switch? Googling has not to helpful Thanks
  20. Hello, Was wondering if anyone is running SPF+ Ethernet Adapter cards in there unraid server? I have a switch with the ports and was looking at getting card to hopefully use to get a nice 10g connection. I am new to using these type of network adapters so any advice would be welcome. Here is the card & cable I was thinking of getting: http://www.ebay.com/itm/131635130770 Thanks
  21. Hello, Originally I had two VMs both with their own pass through NICs. I wanted to add more VMs to the server so I setup a bridge network in the GUI and added the virtual NICs to the VMs. Things seemed to be running smoothly, until I put heavy load on the virtual NICs (Ex: Moving Large or many files, multiple remote desktops). The Windows VM will loss network connection but will still show that the interface is plugged in. Found out if I SSH into the server and cycle the vnet interface connected to that VM the connection comes back. Not sure where to go from here, log file on the server do not show anything when the interfaces locks up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  22. Current setup is that each VM has their own pass though NIC. I would like to know if I would get better/same performance with bonding and/or bridging the NICs together. When it comes to bonding I don’t have a managed switch so I believe that only option I have is balance-alb. My goal is to open up the 6 NICs in the server, so that I have some room for more VMs. Without losing network performance in my current setup. Thanks for the help
  23. Hello, Looking to free up some PCIE slots and was wondering if anyone had some recommendations on good cheap controller cards with four SAS ports (16 SATA drives). The stickies mostly talk about the 2 SAS ports (8 SATA drives) cards. Also those posts seem to be out of date and need to be updated to reflect Unraid 6. Not sure if some of the limitations the posts state are still in affect with the newer version. Thanks for any suggestions
  24. I am in the same boat as jspence27, I have tried to pass though the USB NIC as a do with other USB devices but the VM can not recognize the device. Also is there a way to disable Unraid from using the USB NIC? Tested the USB NIC and it does work on standalone systems, multiple OSs, and Unraid can use it.
  25. Thanks just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something that might mess up the data.
