PCI Express lanes

Featured Replies

I've got a new build up and running using the following parts:

Ryzen 2700
Asus Prime X470 Pro
16GB RAM
Temporary graphics card
4 x storage drives

1 x 256GB SSD for cache

I plan on adding a decent dedicated graphics card in the near future for the single VM use.
I'd also like the option of expanding storage using something like a Dell PERC.

For the VM I'd like to add a dedicated 1TB SSD using an M.2 slot on the motherboard (possibly 2 if I were to run 2 VMs - not at the same time though).
What I'm struggling to understand is how PCI Express lanes work, and if I would have enough for everything above/what compromises I'd need to make.

Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks!

Look at the specs https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/PRIME-X470-PRO/specifications/ the CPU has 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes, 16 for the two 16x slots (either one 16x full speed device like a GPU or two devices at 8x), then 4 lanes for storage via the m.2 slot.

The chipset has 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes, 4 for the last 16x slot (it will run at 4x), 3 for the 1x slots and 2x for storage via the second m.2 slot but really only 1 is available

So that's your budget, 28x - 1 or 2 GPUs will need 16x max total (16x for 1 or 8x times 2), HBAs need 8x for best throughput and that leaves you with 4x for a nic or m.2 drive, just remember the m.2 slots normally share PCIe lanes with other slots, so read the specs for available configuration options.
