Thinking about using unraid, parts list, memory q's

Featured Replies

So I have a high end x99 pc that I built for my gaming pc some years back and now moving to ryzen 3900x and have a need for home server/ data storage. Will unraid work ok for 24/7 without ecc memory?  I have been testing freenass but I'm told using freenas is a bad idea because it will crash with the parts I have.  Is unraid any harder to setup and use than freenas?

Parts list

asus x99 deluxe 2 motherboard

intel i7-6850k

16gb's ddr4 2800 corsair dom platinum

256gb nvme adata s8000 pro

Samsung 250gb 850 pro ssd

pny 500gb ssd pro

intel gigabit nic

xfx rx580

4 3tb wd red drives

I have no experience with  freenas but I don't see why those parts won't work with unRAID. You do understand that unRAID boots and runs from a USB flash drive?

Unraid does NOT run from flash drive. It unpacks the archives fresh from flash at each boot into RAM and it runs completely in RAM. Think of the flash archives as firmware.

Yes of course that is what I meant to say, that it actually runs from memory, thanks for correcting that.

Yes I understand that it starts off of a flash drive. I'm asking if it will be ok to run it on non ecc memory? Also if I shut down the server will it loose any info?

I'm running 24/7 with non ecc.

Don't understand this question. The whole point of a NAS is to save data. What sort of info are you thinking might be lost if you shutdown?

Thank u for the info. Just wondering if it has a shutdown sequence in the software.

Doing a proper shut down sequence from the GUI will close things down the way they need to be. You can do that and power the server back on weeks (or longer) later and have no issues.

what forum post do u guys think is best to read on first setup and learning how to use the software? I have used freenas some but still not that great at it.  Also does anyone know where I can learn more about what dockers, shares, groups mean in FreeBSD/ unraid?

There isn't really the concept of "groups", if by that you mean user groups. There is the ability to control access to network shares for each user separately.

Have you read the Product pages, linked at the top of every forum page?

There is also this wiki Overview:
