December 13, 201015 yr Hello all, I've been coping my data over to unraid and all seems to be going well. I have a question on what happens when the array is idle. When the drives spin up, does UnRaid restart? The server seems to go thru the startup process every time I the server has been idle. Thanks again, Oscar

What is probably happening is the drives are going idle and then have to be spun back up when you go to access them. There is no way to avoid this short of setting the drives to never spin down.
December 13, 201015 yr Author Ok so your saying that it is normal for the server to go thru the startup process then. I was just curious because it give an option to do a mem test or to start unraid. But if that is normal, I got no problem in waiting. Thanks again, Oscar

But if that is normal, I got no problem in waiting. Thanks again, Oscar That is not normal. What are you doing to put the server to sleep? Are you just letting it spin down the disks after their spin-down interval? Or are you pressing a button or invoking a command? Joe L.
December 13, 201015 yr I said nothing about unRAID doing the "startup process" again as being normal. I said it was normal for the disks to spin down, and then there to be a delay/wait for them to spin up. There should not be a need to stop the array and restart the array. There is a HUGE difference between drives being ideal with a pause on drive access, and having to restart the array to get it working again.
December 13, 201015 yr Author I just have the monitor and keyboard hooked up on the server but I have done nothing from the terminal, other than run Preclear script on a disk. I have left a computer transferring data to unraid over night. the next morning I try and start to copy more data I am not able to access Tower from my network places. I then open up the Web-interface and the array shows Idle. What do I need to do at that point to cause the disks to spin up? I have tried to access from other computers on the network and it doesn't seem to wake up. It should not take more than a minute to spin up right? I click on refresh or spin up? Do I need to make changes to the BIOS to allow UnRaid to wake from the network? Thanks Oscar

It can easily take 30 seconds or more to spin up the disks when initially accessed. Especially if you have a lot of disks as they typically will spin up each in turn. I have 11 disks in my array... All have movies. If I look at the "Movies" share when they are all sleeping it takes over a minute to spin them all up. Many programs will not wait that long and issue time-out messages. You'll just need to re-try. You do not need to click on the spin-up button. The web-interface will not self-refresh, so if you want to see the current status you'll need to click on the refresh button. Joe L.
December 13, 201015 yr Just looking at the web interface won't spin up disks. You have to actually access a share to spin up the disks that it spans. Initiating a transfer should cause the disks to spin up, but as Joe said, sometimes the program you are using to transfer the files (Windows Explorer, Mac Finder, TeraCopy, etc) will time out and tell you the transfer failed. Try and try again. To test if this is the issue, you could press the 'spin up' button on the web interface before attempting a transfer. This should eliminate the lag, and the transfer should succeed first try.
December 14, 201015 yr Author ok, looks like I was just not being patient enough, I tried it again this morning. I tried to access share and got message that I did not have access to files. Then I tried to access the Web-interface and nothing came up either. Then I tried and tried again. It took a while to come up, but after a minute or so it came up and share showed up as well. thanks again, Oscar

It will always be instantly available, even when the disks are sleeping. Joe L.
December 14, 201015 yr Author Well then I am not sure what is happening? When I tried to see the web-interface this morning, I got an error saying that I server was unknown or something. I will try again in the morning and get a screen shot of what I see. One quick question: To shut down the server, I must stop the array and then turn off the computer, or there another step before turning off the server? thanks again, Oscar

I will try again in the morning and get a screen shot of what I see.Can you access it via its IP address? How are you trying to access it? With what browser? from what OS? Can you open up a dos command window and type: ping tower or ping ip-address-of-unRAID-server One quick question: To shut down the server, I must stop the array and then turn off the computer, or there another step before turning off the server? You must first stop any add-ons that might be keeping your disks busy. Otherwise, press "Stop" on the management interface, then, once it stops, power down. Joe L.
December 14, 201015 yr Author This morning I was on an XP Machine with explorer Http://tower/main. My mac sometimes has trouble connecting from the finder as well. I read in the manual that it is possible to transfer data via internal disk. Is this done by installing a disk in the server and accessing it via tower? How does that work? Will it be recognized if it is formated in win xp? I assume it would be faster than transferring over network. If an external hd is connected will Unraid be able to read it and transfer files from it?? Thanks again, Oscar
December 14, 201015 yr Look into the community add-on called SNAP, it makes mounting drives outside the array a sn....well, it makes it very easy
