December 30, 201015 yr Hey guys I am in the process of getting my first server up and running. I am having some performance issues though. From reading through the forums it sounds like most people are getting writes around 30 MB/s, I am only getting 10 to 12 MB/s. I bought some of the feared Samsung 4k HDs before I decided, or really looked into unRAID. I hear that the performance using those drives is sub par, but is it really 1/3rd? I had a 1 TB WD EADS drive so I put that in to see what sort of performance I would get writing to it. Still 10 to 12 MB/s. The system consists of a SuperMicro MBD-X7SLA-H-O (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182205), 2 GB of Crucial DDR2 667 SDRAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146523), Hitachi Deskstar 2TB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145298)for parity, 2 x SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101358), in a Norco 4220 case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219033). What I have been streaming from is my desktop PC with Gig NIC through a Gig router. What should I do to get the performance that others are speaking of? Thanks for the help. Jesse
December 30, 201015 yr What should I do to get the performance that others are speaking of? Attach a copy of your syslog post the output of the following commands: ethtool eth0 ifconfig eth0

December 30, 201015 yr Speed: 100Mb/s Your only connecting at 100MBps. What kind of Ethernet cable are you using? You need CAT 5e or CAT 6.
December 30, 201015 yr Author Awesome, I just double checked my router... not Gig... That's what I get for letting the roommate buy stuff I guess. Is that all the speed I can expect without Gig?
December 30, 201015 yr Awesome, I just double checked my router... not Gig... That's what I get for letting the roommate buy stuff I guess. Is that all the speed I can expect without Gig? Yes... you are running as fast as it will let you. (10 to 12 MB/s)
December 30, 201015 yr Author Is there a way to transfer files from 1 location to another with in the server and see what sort of speeds its transfering at?
December 30, 201015 yr Make sure you apply the firmware patch for those Samsung drives before you do anything with them.
December 30, 201015 yr Is there a way to transfer files from 1 location to another with in the server and see what sort of speeds its transfering at? Yes. Easiest for a newcommer to unix is to use "midnight commander" that is built into unRAID. To invoke it type: mc It is a clone of norton commander from the ms-dos days. When copying files I think it even shows you progress and rate of the copy.
December 30, 201015 yr There is a thread where it describes step by step on how to apply firmware patch to the Samsung drives?
December 31, 201015 yr Author I patched them as soon as I got them, thanks though. I'll try out MC and see what sort of performance I am getting. Thanks guys.
December 31, 201015 yr There is a thread where it describes step by step on how to apply firmware patch to the Samsung drives? Yes there is, or at least they link to the firmware download which includes all the steps needed to apply their patches. It's included in the warning thread and the other threads mentioning the drives usually have a link to that thread too.
