Does UnRaid Support Multi Core CPU's

Featured Replies

This might be a stupid question but...

I just wanted to know if the latest version of UnRaid supports multi core processors since it is Linux based.  My current hardware for my UnRaid server is a P4 3.2G with 2G of DDR667 and 4x WD Green 1.5G EARS.  I'm upgrading my desktop so with the extra parts available I am able to build an AMD Athlon X2 5600 with 4G of OCZ DDR800 and was planning on putting this in as my server.  I know transfer speeds might not be better but if ever a drive did fail and needed to be rebuilt the AMD cpu would do a quicker job than the old P4?

Thanks

Up to 4 cores are supported this now I believe.

However you will likely see NO difference in rebuild speed with a faster CPU. If you plan to use the machine for other things like transcoding or the like then more CPU = better but as a NAS only appliance it doesnt need it

No, even the oldest Pentium P4 calculates parity at speeds FAR higher than any disk drive can be read.

My 5 year old server with an old celeron cpu shows this lin in its syslog:

Apr 10 17:50:42 Tower kernel: md: xor using function: pIII_sse (3698.000 MB/sec)

No disk will be able to have a sustained read speed of more than 100MB/s.  The "parity" function (primarily an "xor" operation) is FAR faster.  The old Pentium is over 30 times faster than any physical disks.
