unraid hd to another unraid server

What would happen... say in two years... I want to build a bigger server... upgrade my plus to a pro etc..

Can I just take out my HD's, and put them in a new server? Will it just mount as a disk?

yes.. migration is a non-issue.

That's excellent to hear!

Just make sure in the config > Disk devices panel you select what drives go to which slot. Not necessarily which cable on the motherboard. That is how unRAID knows hot to keep track of everything.

That's why I would highly recommend you number each drive with a marker, label or anything method you can with its slot so you know which drive is what and in what position in the Devices tab.

Notice how each of my drives has a number then 6 digits.

1st is the slot in my device config

2nd is the last 6 digits on my serial number.

P for parity on bottom and then on the very top nothing because I'm preclearing it. Of course I go one step farther with different color cables meaning different things, but that's just because I'm a little nuts. ;)

Didn't think that mattered.. Mind you I did label the drives P-1-2-3-4-5..

I Have just built a new box which holds 24 hot-swap disks, Supermicro mobo, 28 SATA ports (3X8 ports on Supermicro cards plus 4 ports on mobo) and I want to move my current array of 16 disks (14 data + parity + cache) to the new box all in one shot. Will this be as easy as I think? My plan is to pull all 16 drives out of the old box, mount them in the new box and then start up the array. The array should be stopped when it comes up because the assignments will be wrong and it would be just dumb luck if they were all assigned to the correct slots. I have a printout of my currently working 16 disk array showing the model and serial numbers of all 16 disk assignments. While my array is stopped, I will assign the 16 disks exactly as they were in my original configuration and then start the array back up.

Is this the correct procedure?

P.S. - I have more disks to add to the array, but I will not mount them in the box until I have my original array back up and running.

Oh yeah...I am running 4.5.6.

That will work.  A screen shot before you migrate of the "devices" page will make it easier to re-assign everything as it was in the old server.

As you said, do not add or delete drives to the array until after the initial migration of the disks is completed and the array is back on-line.

Yeah, that's what I got....a screenshot...:)

Thanks, Joe! I figured it would be wise of me to ask before I got myself in trouble...heheh.
