binjinx
Any kind of unRAID parity calculator out there? looking to not waste drive space on the parity drive if my system is only going to use 1TB max for the drives I have then thats what I want to allocate for it (no sense dropping in a 1.5tb or higher if its not going to be used) Link to comment
kizer
Whatever you use for Parity just make sure its the largest or equal to your largest drive in your array. If your largest drive is only going to be 1TB then use a 1TB drive. With prices as cheap as they are you could go with a 1.5. If your largest drive is only a 500GB then use a 500GB. Its not a total of all your drives. Link to comment
eroz
not sure I follow what you are asking........ unRAID requires that your parity drive be as large as your biggest data drive. If you are only going to use 1TB data drives, then your parity drive needs to be at least 1TB. Link to comment
lionelhutz
Parity data is written 1:1 to match your largest data drive. So, if you have a 2T data drive then there will be 2T of parity data written. It's a very low level parity 1 or 0 taken from each bit stripe on the data drives. The amount of data stored on the parity drive does not change depending on the files you have stored. The parity drive also does not hold the equivalent of say par2 files. You can't tell unRAID to use more parity to provide better data recoverability. Peter Link to comment
