Newbie question

Recommended Posts

I have been running unraid for about 3 months now and I am on version 4.5.6.  I finally noticed that 4.6 is out and I was wondering what is the best procedure to upgrade and not just hope that my data is preserved.  I am still a newbie and this would be the first upgrade with data on the array so I just want to make sure I follow all procedures and don't bungle it.  I have a bunch of modules installed and things in my "go" file so I want to make sure I preserve these as well.  Any help or pointing to directions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Neil

The instructions on how to upgrade are in the release notes of every announcement.

For you to upgrade, download the new release and un-zip it on your PC.

Then, on the flash drive, rename

bzroot to bzroot.456

rename

bzimage to bzimage.456

Then, copy the new bzroot and bzimage files from the un-zipped downloaded distribution to the root of your flash drive.

You can get to the flash drive without even unplugging it by typing

\\tower\flash

in your file explorer, so the rename and copy can be done from your PC without even unplugging the flash drive from the server.

Then, just stop the server by pressing "Stop" on the management interface, and click on the "reboot" button.

That's it.  You've upgraded.  Just by replacing two files and rebooting.

(The re-name of the two files was in case you wanted to revert to the old release for some reason, rename them back to their original names and reboot)

Your "go" script is un-changed, the cofig files are un-changed, and your data is un-changed.

As far as your data is concerned just remember your OS lives on your USB stick independently of your Data, which lives on your drives. In the event of you messing up your USB all you would have to do is reconfigure your OS and your Data would still be there waiting for you. ;)

If there is any concern you could simply copy all of your files from your USB to another source say a PC or another USB and in the event of messing something up you could copy right back over to your USB an be back in business.

One thing to add to Joe's direction.

Make sure the flash drive is set to be accessable over the network. Go to the web management page and then click the shares link. Make sure the flash share is set to read/write or read/write hidden. Then, you can access it with \\tower\flash as Joe recommends.
