Quick User Security Question

Featured Replies

Just upgraded to Beta4 and am having some user security problems.  If i turn off user security i can double click on my Tower in network neighbourhood and see whatever drives i exported.  However, soon as i turn user security on, if i even click on Tower in network neighbourhood, it says it is unaccesable.  Soon as i turn off user security, i can see the Tower again.  Also, it never prompts me for username/password anywhere.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you using "Simple File Sharing" method in Windows?  If so, you need to turn this off (Folder Options, View tab, at the bottom).

Also try re-booting the Windows PC.

How do you get the server to prompt you for a password for the user shares again?  i want to try the different user names i made up but once i put in my user name and password, it always asumes i want to log in as the same user.  I want to try the same share but with a user name and password i made for my roommate to see if it works as well.

Problem is Windows only lets you connect to a server using one user name at a time.  And once you use that user name for a particular server, Windows "remembers" it and won't prompt you again.

I have found this method to work:

1. open a command window and type this command:

net use * /d

This will delete all current network connections.

Now see if you can re-connect to the server; if not, then:

2. reboot Windows.

I have found that most of the time step 1 by itself works.  Sometimes I have to reboot after doing step 1.  Also, if you don't want to disconnect all your other network settings, you can try this instead:

net use
net use \\tower /d
net use \\tower\share /d
...

The first command will list all your connections.  The rest of the commands will delete just those connections to your server (of course substsitute 'tower' with whatever your server name is, and the actual share name(s) for 'share').
