January 14, 201115 yr What could cause my network connection to keep dropping out this consistently during a file copy??
January 14, 201115 yr What version of unRAID? What network? What other traffic on the network? You asked a question about a vague as I started to drive my car to my aunts house in California but had a problem. What might be wrong? At the minimum, supply the output of ethtool eth0 and ifconfig eth0 The pauses in output you've illustrated might be very normal for Windows7 unless you configure it correctly. It is a windows7 feature to keep the data transfer from interfering with media being played from the LAN. Joe L.

It took me a while to figure out how to get the picture to show up correctly in the post and now I realize that I didn't write nearly enough! Unraid version is 4.6 Final Network is Gigabit with a D-Link DGS 2208 switch between server and USB device on Windows 7 x64 machine. No other traffic on network and no media playing locally on Windows x64 machine USB drive is a 500GB WD passport I will update post with ethtool eth0 and ifconfig eth0 output later when I'm home.

January 15, 201115 yr Why don't you try copying a file from the W7 computer internal drive to the server? That could rule out the network or the USB drive. I know my external drive is slow but it is usually fairly consistant. I see a surge and then buffers fill and the speed drops for the rest of the copy. Also, are you copying small files? I see something similar when copying small files. I see a network speed burst for each file with a pause between them. Peter
January 15, 201115 yr Author The transfer of large files (>1GB) between the internal SATA drive on the Win 7 machine and the UnRAID server is similar to the pic above but not as pronounced or as frequent as with a USB drive (I tried another SATA drive with a powered USB enclosure and had similar results to what is shown above). There's definitely something going on with the network. I had the same issues in Vista and I was hoping my upgrade to Win 7 might yield better results. I've seen a lot of users report delays upon initial copy (e.g. "calculating remaining time") when copying files from Win 7 to their arrays and I've experienced the same. In my case, the issue seems to be some sort of network timeout/dropout. Sometimes, I have to abort a copy and initiate it immediately after without issue. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=8713.0;topicseen NIC info: I have a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller on the Win 7 machine. I'm currently using Realtek driver 7.032.1111.2010 and have static IP's on both machines. FWIW, I've tried Teracopy and MC and had similar results.

If it fails when transferring many files it could be the too many open files problem specifically fixed in the 4.7 release. Joe L.
January 15, 201115 yr Author When you say "fails" do you mean the copy doesn't successfully complete or do you mean when it hangs at the beginning of a copy? I was holding off on the 4.7 upgrade as I'm planning to add a few new drives to the array and I wanted to preclear and add them before the upgrade. I suppose I could try the upgrade prior to adding the disks and then revert back to 4.6 final to do it? I just completed a larger transfer of 187GB from the server (7 seasons of the show House all in HD) to a powered USB drive that took about an hour and 15 minutes. The average rate appeared to be approx. 26 MB/sec but I still had the seesaw effect shown above. About half way through the transfer my network utilization peaked around 70-80% but then settled back into the 50% range. The consistency of the network utilization (like a step wave) leads me to believe that something is deliberately causing it like a read/write buffer. For example, could it be the peaks represent reading of data across the network and the lows represent writing to the disk? The consistent size might indicate a full buffer? I'm purely speculating at this point...
January 15, 201115 yr What happens when you copy files between your regular desktop/laptop computer and your unRAID? What kind of network/speeds are you seeing there?
January 15, 201115 yr Author What happens when you copy files between your regular desktop/laptop computer and your unRAID? What kind of network/speeds are you seeing there? I've seen different results depending on the disk in the array but usually anywhere from 25-40 MB/sec. I don't think speed is the issue. When it's transferring files the rate seems ok but there's definitely some kind of activity (either network or hard drive) going on during the transfer contributing to the problem. I've also disabled the NIC power management scheme and set the hard drive never to turn off on the Win 7 machine.
January 15, 201115 yr Author Here's a screenshot of a 30GB transfer of 23 files about 3/4 of the way through between Win7 machine and UnRAID server. Total transfer time was 15-20 min. Whatever happened in the middle of this transfer caused Windows to adjust remaining time significantly even though the transfer rate remained consistent at 34 MB/sec. I know it's not a good measure of transfer time but I thought it was interesting to note the network drop coincided with this adjustment.
