August 20, 20205 yr Starting to expand my current unraid, and kind of want to "go big or go home". I am fairly new to this so excuse me if I use wrong terminology. https://www.newegg.ca/silver-black-athena-power-rm-4u4243he12/p/N82E16811192419?item=N82E16811192419&source=region&nm_mc=knc-googleadwordsca-pc&cm_mmc=knc-googleadwordsca-pc-_-pla-_-server+-+chassis-_-N82E16811192419&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvvj5BRDkARIsAGD9vlJn1kBw9HmGNbA6B1liMLGFn8_z2Y9UYR_l-ZKPiVk01XUSxljKvwoaAgS7EALw_wcB Found a deal on this case above that has the backplane and power supply working, no mobo or sas card. I am going to install as many WD RED drives in this as possible and my main concern is the connectivity. The backplane is powered by 6x molex and has 6 miniSAS connections. What SAS card do I need to buy to get all 24 drives working? Looking at the compatibility list (https://wiki.unraid.net/Hardware_Compatibility#PCI_SATA_Controllers) It just looks like gibberish to me. I would like to make sure I am getting SATA3 speeds at least. Any help or guidance is appreciated. Thanks
August 20, 20205 yr You can get an 8 port LSI like the 9211-8i or 9300-8i and a SAS expander, get multiple 8 port HBAs, or get 24 port HBA, but those are usually more expensive than a HBA plus expander.

To clarify -- Does the 8 port mean that it supports 8 drives? So I would need 4 - 8 port HBAs?
August 20, 20205 yr You should avoid this case, pls ref. user feedback ( the one and only one ), better found some product with build-in expander in blackplane. From my experience, extra expander + cable would cost more then expander blackplane product, airflow also benefits will less cable inside the case. HBA + cable ( 1 or 2 ) + expander blackplane HBA + cable ( 1 or 2 ) + expander + cable ( 6 for 24 bays) + blackplane Pls also note, non-expander blackplate also have equip enclosure management controllers or not, you should choice have those controller too. For example Backplane with ami MG9072 Chip ( https://ami.com/en/products/ami-backplane-controllers/ ) https://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-BPN-SAS-846TQ-Backplane-MG9072-Chip/dp/B001F070MU Edited August 20, 20205 yr by Benson

Of course, you can use three 8 port controller to connect 24 disks, but you need 3 PCIe slot. Edited August 20, 20205 yr by Benson
