Unable to open /dev/net/tun, is tun module loaded?: No such file or directory

Featured Replies

Hi,

when I try to start my Ubuntu 20.04 VM, I get the folling execution error:

"Unable to open /dev/net/tun, is tun module loaded?: No such file or directory"

As I can see at the moment my Windows VM and my docker container are running without problems.

Thank you very much for the non-existent answer, a restart helped.

However, the problem already came in several other posts without a solution.

I found that answer you were looking for.

Putting this error into duckduckgo reveals two common error sources, and this thread is the second result.

In regards to this error with virtual machines, the common answer is just a host reboot. This was my solution.

Arch source OP believes suspending the host regularly led to the error. It's also theorized updating without rebooting caused it.

However, this error has also appeared in relation to general virtual networking. These appear more involved than a power cycle, being a configuration or permission issue.
