Need help, setup direct network link with my Desktop on UNRAID

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have an UNRAID (6.8.3) and it has a 1Gbps nic (on-board) connected to my router. Now to allow for faster network transfer b/w Unraid server and my Desktop (windows 10 pro), i wanted to install a 2.5 Gbps nic on both the machines.

On Windows 10 machine, it works fine but on my Unraid server it is giving me following issues.

  1. Once the PCIe nic is installed upon boot it shows up with a strange error message at boot i.e. "Not enough information: "dev" argument is required" (see attached pic).
    1. Intrestingly if both the nic is connected to the switch, Unraid continues to boot and by defaults starts using the nic on PCIe (2.5 Gbps)
    2. If I un-plug the PCIe nic or connect it to my PC, the boot halts at the above message, note the on-board one is still connected but in disabled (the lights on the switch gets turned off).
  2. As mentioned above, the PCIe nic (the 2.5 Gbps) get picked up as the default, and the on-board one gets disabled (the lights on the switch gets turned off)
    1. Note the network adapter uses RTL8125 chipset (Realtek)
  3. As mentioned above the on-board nic is active during BIOS, but once Unraid starts to load it gets disables, i.e. the lights on the Lan connector gets turned off both on the pc and switch side.

IMPORTANT: The 2.5Gbps works in UNRAID, the issue is it gets picked up as primary (eth0) and the onboard nic (eth1) is visible in 'Network Setting' but i am not able to get it to work as expected. i.e.

Where I need help is, to get the following setup working:

  • The on-board nic (currently is getting picked up as eth1), i would like it to be the primary connectivity to the internet
    • Subnet 192.168.0.x
  • The PCIe (2.5 Gbps), I would like to connect it with my Windows Desktop using a ethernet cable, so that I get faster access to my file share from my desktop (that's the primary goal).
    • Subnet 192.168.1.x (or 10.0.0.x)
    • If required I can update my Host file to map DNS to the IP if required.

My system configuration:

  • Motherboard - ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. ROG STRIX B450-I GAMING Version Rev 1.xx
  • CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with Radeon Vega Graphics @ 3700 MHz
  • RAM - 32 GiB DDR4
  • Kernel - Linux 4.19.107-Unraid x86_64
  • UNRAID - 6.8.3
