November 13, 20205 yr I am wondering whether anyone has experienced degrading performance on Windows 10 VMs? I have been utiling various flavours of Windows VMs on Unraid with GPU passthrough over the years. All have been excellent, with very little difference to bare metal. Over recent months I have been getting declining performance which manifests as lag. Opening the windows menu has a few second delay before icons appear. Moving a window has a delay. Delay in opening, playing, pausing video. Its performing like I am using a remote desktop session. its occuring on fresh Windows 10 installs with no other software installations. I have opened both system information on the VM as well as viewing my servers dashboard via a different device. CPU, Memory, GPU performance are unsurprising and well within the hardware allocation for the VM, ie less than 25% CPU usage, even lower memory usage and GPU usage in the 1-2% range. My only interesting observation is that I am sometimes getting 100% virtual NIC usage, but on the whole it is also unsurprising. But still the OS is sluggish to being unuseable. I am wondering whether its a Windows 10 issue. As a result I have gone back to Windows 8.1 Has anyone else experienced problems with Windows 10 VMs recently? None of my Linux OS VMs are having issues.
November 13, 20205 yr The same experience here, with RAM load of 95% on 12gb.Sent from my Mi A3 using Tapatalk
November 13, 20205 yr Author Did you upgrade to the version of Windows 10 or did you install the latest ISO? My original WIndows 10 was installed using a version 1607 then upgraded to the current version, 20H2 I think. I downloaded the latests ISO and tried an install and get the same problem. I noted last night though that after installation, when you go to add the virtIO drivers that device manager is only showing two missing devices. I recalled we used to have to install four virtIO drivers. It seems I am not getting the option to install either the balloon or netkvm. Are these no longer required?
November 13, 20205 yr Author Another thing I have noticed. Whenever WIndows 10 upgrades substantially all the settings I adjusted have been reverted. For example I turned off Windows Search, Stopped schedueld defrag, hyperfil.sys etc..after an update they are all back on.
November 13, 20205 yr I used an ISO generated by the media creation tool. Drivers are also all fine here. I noticed, that by reducing RAM allocation to 8GB the mem load sank to 65%...
November 13, 20205 yr ... but still slow. Interesting also, that playing games is not affected, the GPU is fine and responsive.
November 13, 20205 yr Author Games is where I noticed it. I play Path of Exile and its like playing via PowerPoint. Its never been like that. Only recently got bad. Now Windows 10 isnt responsive. Im at 3.3GB mem usage with 16GB allocated.
November 13, 20205 yr Do you know if there are any rules about mem allocation?Sent from my Mi A3 using Tapatalk
November 13, 20205 yr just set up a fedora VM, working fine and fluently with 4GB RAM. Must be a WIN10 problem.
November 13, 20205 yr Author I dont know if there are any mem rules. Not that I have seen. Mine worked fine for ages without problems. I have almost a 1000hrs on Path of Exile this season and rarely ever have problems. Now my frame rates are down to single digits. Just looking at my system now when I open Path of Exile its pegging the CPU. It seems like its using CPU for GPU processing, hence why its slow to build screens and such. Task Manager shows my GTX1080 is operating at 3% usually, though it does go to 21% rarely. I find it odd that my FPS is single digits but my GPU is operating less than 25% and my CPU is stressed.
November 14, 20205 yr I set up a new Win 10 VM and deleted the old, slow one. For me this fixed the speed issue. Hope this helps.
