  1. I am building a new system with 6x SATA2 (3 Gbps) Ports on the motherboard and I am adding a Dell Perc H310 (IT mode). I know the parity disk and largest disks should be on the fastest ports. Can someone tell me if I should be putting these disks on the motherboard or the H310?
  2. I know, I know. 1 Parity Drive. I may indeed add a second when my new system is up and running. I didn't have notifications, and the red ball was not obvious at first. The disk has been full for a long time and I just had a few errors, then more, then finally a red ball. Bottom line I just got complacent. I won't again. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
  3. Very sorry. That was a typo. I was just trying to say that if i rebuild an array without disks 3 and 5, the array would be perfectly fine when the build is done, it would just not have any data that was on disk 3 and 5. I am trying to confirm that the data on the rest of the disks would be in tact and parity would be functioning properly.
  4. Sorry. I'm trying to confirm the process to create a new array with disks that already have data on them. I've never done this before. I always started with a couple of empty disks and kept adding on. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
  5. So 1. put all of the disks that have data in the enclosure 2. start up unraid i know there is a way to tell unraid to ignore the current configuration and just build a new array. that should take all the data on the disks and build a new parity disk from them, and when it's done I will have a new array minus whatever data was on the disks I included from the array. Correct?
  6. Great. Then I am not going to freak out too much yet. I think I can live with the worst case scenario if it come to that.
  7. If I put the disks in a clean array and start from there, then the only data lost will be on the disks missing from the array correct? In other words if disks 3 and 5 are missing and restart the array the only data lost will be from disks 3 and 5? Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
  8. I agree. This was not my plan at all. It started with my MV8 cards going bad and then realizing I need to upgrade from PCI-X. Ok. So for now my plan is to load unRAID onto an old core 2 duo PC and attached the bad drive via USB. If it can be read I will clone it and try and drop the clone in Megatron. My most critical files are on CrashPlan so I know I can get the necessary stuff back if it's a total catastrophe. I think I can also copy each disk one at a time to a clean array if I needed to, right? Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
  9. HDWE150_76IAK972F57D is the 5TB disk I bought to replace the original redball. disk 3 - Z1F2PLM3 was the original redball... see the attached capture. disk 5 - W1F0ZQ9M is the disk i cannot boot with now. The one thing I did not do was confirm which disks were in each slot in the chassis before I started mucking around. So now I am unsure if there may have been a problem with the disk 3 slot, that has affected disk 5 now. Either way, I have a new 3TB disk on the way that I will use to attempt to clone W1F0ZQ9M. Unless you tell me otherwise, I will wait until the new MB and Dell PERC H310 card arrives before I try to reboot the array. Do you know if there is a Windows utility that will allow me to read the linux file system if I attach it via my USB enclosure? I am hoping W1F0ZQ9M is readable outside of UNRAID. Also, do you know if there is something I can use to test each port on the enclosure before I put the whole system back together?
  10. Ok. I have attached diagnostics. Redball was for several weeks. Maybe a month. I have the following which I think I can use to clone the drive. https://amzn.com/B00IKC14OG But I have not tried to use it for that yet, and definitely not for a linux file system. I need to buy a second replacement and then look into the clone. All of this said, I am waiting on replacement hardware which will be here next week. My plan was to put all these drives on the new system next weekend, but I wanted to sort out the redball first. megatron-diagnostics-20160908-2125.zip
  11. I can't. But maybe I can clone it with another PC then try the cloned drive Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
  12. Could I try and clone the 2nd disk and then rebuild from the clone? Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
  13. Darnit. ok. so follow up question. 11 disk array. one redball (3tb). new disk (5tb) pre-cleared and set to go. second disk (3b) fails before I rebuild array with new disk. (second disk is the aforementioned 3TB Seagate) What's the best approach to rebuild the array with two missing disks? Actually now I am thinking the original problem could be the port the redball was plugged into.
  14. I can boot unraid without this disk plugged in. If I plug in this disk, the system hangs and doesn't complete a boot. I can't even get a syslog out of it. When I insert the disk after a clean boot without it, it kicks off a bunch of kernel errors and stops unraid. I can't even get a syslog out of it. This disk used to work just fine in my array, no issues... although it is one of those dreaded 3 TB Seagates that have failed so many times for me. Can anyone think of why just plugging in a disk (into any slot btw) kills unraid?
  15. Waiting on a new Motherboard with 2 Xeon L5520 CPUs and 64 GB RAM in it. A question about multiple CPUs. Is it accurate that the 2 CPUs will allow double the number of Plex Streams? In other words, does UNRAID, and Plex in particular take advantage of both CPUs?
  16. I have been running it headless for years. I only ever go to the rack when I have an issue like upgrading a drive. That said, I could probably save some power if I had better control of the fans, etc. It seems pretty cool.
  17. I just purchased a SuperMicro X8DTE board. This is the first time I purchased a motherboard specifically for UNRAID. Unfortunately, I did not get the X8DTE-F version which supports IPMI. I didn't know what IPMI was when I made the purchase. It seems like a neat feature, I am just looking for some feedback from those who have it on how useful it is, and whether or not I should change my re-build plans to include it.
  18. Ok. I bit the bullet and got a new motherboard, ram and disk controllers. All should fit into my SuperMicro 933 15 Disk Case. New MB: X8DTE (https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/QPI/5500/X8DT6-F.cfm?SAS=N&IPMI=N) CPU's: 2 x L5520 CPU's (http://ark.intel.com/products/40201/Intel-Xeon-Processor-L5520-8M-Cache-2_26-GHz-5_86-GTs-Intel-QPI) 32 GB RAM New Controllers: 2x Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller 310 (http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pvaul/en/dell-perc-h310-spec-sheet.pdf) Upgrading to PCI-Express and 32GB of RAM with the ability to use SSDs ... all of that should be a much better system than what I have (had). All that cost me $230, so hopefully when it's all done it's worth it.
  19. Yikes. I will try the latest RC while I wait for the new MV8. The board I have only takes PCI-X not PCIe. So it's probably time for a new board if the MV8 cards don't solve the problem. Any recommendation on a replacement for the H8DAE that has PCIe? I assume I should replace with another server board? I have desktop boards but I don't want to replace power supplies if I don't need too. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
  20. I just noticed something odd. I am reaching my server via SSH. At 192.169.1.79. I can ping that IP address as well. But this diagnostics file does not have the name of the server. It says tower. Before it's said the name of the server, Megatron. Is it possible the config is not loading?
  21. I probably have a flakey MV8 card because I do not see the too many missing disks error anymore. I removed preclear disk beta which was the other change I made prior to this issue happening. I cannot see any more issues in the log, but the WebGUI will not start. Can anyone see the cause of problem now? Diagnostics attached. tower-diagnostics-20160903-0758.zip
  22. I really would like to move away from the old supermicro board all together and use one of the core i5's I have lying around. I just cant bring myself to tackle replacing the mother board in the supermicro 15 drive enclosure. Do you have a card you recommend instead of the MV8?
  23. I just ordered a couple of replacement MV8s just in case. If its not the problem, I will build a second server.
  24. I did not upgrade any software. But I did just finish the longest preclear ever using preclear beta. It took 5 or 6 days. Is there a chance I killed the MV8 controller with that workout? It was a used controller so maybe it was just too much? I dunno. I can upgrade to the latest RC to see if it helps. I also tried pulling the new 5 TB drive to make sure it wasnt an issue with the new Toshiba drive. I just added it. This is the one. https://amzn.com/B013JPLKQK I don't think this is the problem, but I figure I would let you all know.
  25. I am sure the cards are seated. They both show up in the bios prior to unraid start. I have two of these: Supermicro SAT2-MV8 8Port SATA PCI-X Controller Card Low Profile The motherboard is: https://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron2000/MCP55/H8DAE-2.cfm I purchased one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FreeNAS-Storage-15-bay-with-LSI-SATA-Controllers-FreeBSD-Linux-UNRAID-/331954147532?hash=item4d4a0250cc:g:88UAAOxy9ERSRCdb 14 disks of various sizes. This occurred when I was trying to preclear before replacing a redball (red x). I have been using it for 2 years without too much problems.
