  1. I am trying to figure out if this is possible, to change the cpu cores that unRaid uses. I have come across this post over here while searching for help on why my VM performance is so terrible on my unRaid server. I have an intel 10100 in it currently and it serves most of the duties i ask of it serving as my NAS, docker usage, and NVR for my security system, but something i have never been able to get working properly is VMs. They have always stuttered constantly, especially when trying to play video. It doesn't matter if i pin the cores to 2, 4, 6, or 8 threads of the CPU, it doesn't seem to change the performance issues in the VM. I came across the above post and found out that im guessing that unRaid task are the reason the CPU has stuttering issues. IDK why, but i can isolate my VM to just 2,3,6,7 and pass through the GPU and play a video in the VM on youtube. If i open something on the unRaid server and perform task in the background while the video is playing, it causes the video to stutter. Something as simple as transfering a file to the server across the network or starting a video in Plex... the VM starts stuttering while this event is occuring. I even isolated the docker container to 1,5 and it still somehow causes the VM to stutter. Its not a temperate issue, because the CPU is maxing out in the 70s under load. So can i isolate cores to unRaid and the dockers in the method mentioned above? I am thinking that my CPU is just unable to handle all the task or something, because if i turn off all my dockers and run the VM, i can play videos without stuttering and games are actually playable, but i can't seem to do both... So i was thinking of upgrading my unRaid server to something with more cores like a 13500/13600 and if possible hard lock the cpu cores that unRaid uses to the E-Cores. I would think if i can lock unRaid and the dockers to the E-Cores, it would use less energy performing its task and conserve the P-Cores to VMs.
  2. Hello All, I am looking for a little advice. I have not run any of my VMs for a while, but they previously worked. I recently tried to get Home Assistant up and running and after finding out the docker version doesn't contain the app store so I can install HACS for my reolink cameras... So I tried to install it in a VM, but I can't get pass it booting into EFI Internal Shell and not booting if I select the disk manually. I was curious and tried to start my old Windows 10 VM and Ubuntu VM that previously worked for me and they are doing the same boot issue... I recently upgraded the server to 6.12.6 so I tried to roll it back to version 6.12.4, but that made no difference. This is the only thing in the logs I'm seeing close to errors.
  3. So latest update, i managed to figure out how to boot into efi shell after numerious different attempt methods.. found this video to actually work.. Now the issue im having is when i boot up the system into unRaid i am not seeing the SAS drives plugged into the HBA now... I flashed the HBA into IT mode using 2118it.bin and mptsas2.rom So i have to figure out how to get the drives to show up.... not sure if there are additional steps im overlooking to get them to show up in unRaid...
  4. Thank you JorgeB for your reply, i ended up getting help over on the reddit that my HBA is in fact working, but my HBA is in IR mode and i need to flash it to IT mode ive been told to be able to use it in unRaid, but im having lots of issue with that. Im currently trying to research it more, because i tried multiple systems trying to use freedos, but kept getting the pal error, which means i need to use efi version of flash tool, but im not understanding or doing something wrong creating a bootable efi version, because all the writeups ive followed so far have not allowed me to boot into that version.
  5. Hey All, I am still learning, but trying to figure out what my issue is. I am trying to upgrade my current unRaid server, i ran out of SATA ports for HDs and bought a HBA LSI SAS card from bitdeals along with some SAS HD's, because they are significantly cheaper than SATA comparable drives from bitdeals. What i bought is this.. https://bitdeals.tech/collections/controllers/products/lsi-sas-9211-8i-hba LSI SAS 9211-8i HBA I connected a few SAS HDs to the HBA via SAS breakout cable. The cable i used is this... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BW1U1GS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 SFF-8087 to SFF-8482 I thought originally that the HBA was not functional, but I see LEDs on it and when i feel the SAS HDs, they feel like they are spinning, so unsure where to go from here.. this is kinda the limit to my knowledge on using HBA and SAS drives, this is my first time trying an HBA. In the syslog i found this mentioned.. "Jun 5 18:03:15 Tower kernel: mpt2sas_cm0: LSISAS2008: FWVersion(12.00.00.00), ChipRevision(0x03), BiosVersion(07.23.01.00) Jun 5 18:03:15 Tower kernel: mpt2sas_cm0: Protocol=(Initiator), Capabilities=(Raid,TLR,EEDP,Snapshot Buffer,Diag Trace Buffer,Task Set Full,NCQ) Jun 5 18:03:15 Tower kernel: scsi host1: Fusion MPT SAS Host Jun 5 18:03:15 Tower kernel: mpt2sas_cm0: sending port enable !! Jun 5 18:03:15 Tower kernel: mpt2sas_cm0: hba_port entry: 000000007b149c7d, port: 255 is added to hba_port list Jun 5 18:03:15 Tower kernel: mpt2sas_cm0: host_add: handle(0x0001), sas_addr(0x500605b00542ac20), phys(8) Jun 5 18:03:15 Tower kernel: mpt2sas_cm0: port enable: SUCCESS" But... none of the SAS HDs are showing up on the server that I can tell and I don't see them as a device listed in the Bios.
  6. Well.. it turns out my issue was not a failing flash drive apparently... Someone messaged me and informed me their is a bug with Unassigned Drive app update recently, that would grab the unraid boot drive and cause the server to drop into a massive error state, displaying tons of read errors on the flash drive. They informed me that when it updated randomly for my server, it caused this bug and all i needed to do was delete UD and restart the server, which i did and it booted up as if nothing ever happed displaying 0 errors now for the unRaid boot flash drive.. with good smart report..
  7. Hello All, I am curious if there is a better option than using a USB drive? I have been only using unRaid since 10/13/2020 and I'm going through my 3rd USB drive failure... This will be 3 USB drives in 17 months.. I started off using a brand new (Samsung 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Fit (MUF-64BB/AM)) and installed the trial version of unRaid to play around with it on my gaming PC. In the first 30 days i had an issue with the server not booting off the USB drive anymore randomly. So since i was happy with unRaid outside of that issue i ordered parts to build a dedicated unRaid server with a new USB drive. So i bought (SanDisk 32GB Cruzer Fit USB 2.0 Flash Drive - SDCZ33-032G-G35) after asking for recommendations from the community and telling me a USB 2.0 drive was better to use than a 3.0 drive and many mentioned this drive was the one they used. Server was doing well for a few months, i was invested in unRaid at this point and out of the blue the USB drive stop booting again, but this was on completely different hardware than the first computer i tested unRaid on. I couldn't get the USB drive to format and allow me to install unraid on it again.. so started over with a brand new USB drive.. So i bought another USB drive listed from my old recommended suggestion post i asked and bought (SanDisk Ultra 16 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive ‎SDCZ48-016G-U46) which was installed July of 2021. Now today, i am getting a banner that the drive is failing or corrupted and the server is down and none of my VMs or Dockers are running. This is the first time it failed and I'm getting an error with the server still running, so im assuming its another USB drive failure, but i cant just keep chucking USB drives at this every few months, this is getting really annoying. 1) Samsung 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Fit (MUF-64BB/AM) = This USB drive was used on my Gaming PC only, it was restarted often as i used the PC mainly for windows for gaming while i played around learning about unRaid. 2) SanDisk 32GB Cruzer Fit USB 2.0 Flash Drive - SDCZ33-032G-G35 = This USB drive was restarted often, because i didn't leave the server on 24/7 and only used it when needed to write/read stuff from the storage drives. This was only used on the new NAS build, which was all brand new parts running on intel 10100/ ITX mobo in an Fractal Design R2 NAS case 3)SanDisk Ultra 16 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive ‎SDCZ48-016G-U46 = This USB drive was used on the same hardware listed under drive #2, I started leaving the server on 24/7, because i was told the constant restarting of the server was the reason for Drive failure 2. So this USB drive was only powered down like 2 or 3 times over its lifetime. unRaid server is plugged into 1500VA APC UPS BN1500M2 and directly wired via Ethernet. No wifi antennas or connections. My question is what is the best plan of action for me going forward?
  8. Update: found a fix for it by someone on reddit, as far as i can tell its fixed, just wish i understand what happened and how it was fixed.. The simple fix was Tools - New Permissions, select the user shares and run the script on them.. this fixed so i can access the shares via my PCs now.. the only thing that still not working that previously worked is \\tower... outside of this i can explore to my shares via explorer and see all my shares and network map them to the pc again.
  9. Justed added info... someone on reddit asked if i could ping it... here are the results..
  10. ty, I just viewed my host file, but the ip address in it is correct, so i didnt change it. I did do the ipconfig dnsflush, but still errors out on \\tower I can access my gui via 192.168.254.10
  11. Most likely reason would be cached name resolution somewhere. Easiest solution would probably be to manually set the entry in your windows hosts files on the various client machines linking tower with the static IP you assigned to the server. Could you possibly go into slight more details on this, still learning as i go.
  12. Update: I have gotten a little progress. I cant access my tower shares or gui via \\TOWER like i could previously, but i learned i could access the shares seperately via ip address in my case 192.168.254.10\media. It prompted me for a user/password. The root user with my normal password didnt work, so i create a new user on the server and was able to enter that share user/password and get into the share finally, but now i need to figure out why its not able to found via \\tower anymore like it was prior to switching the ethernet ports.
  13. Hey All, I am looking for some help to solve an issue i seemed to have created, fixing another issue i was dealing with. My unRaid server i recently built, the motherboard has a 1gig and 10gig ethernet port. Since setting it all up i completely missed the fact that this whole time it was plugged into the 1gig port, so someone helped me switch everything over by moving my eth0 from the 1gig port to the 10gig port, switch the ethernet cable to that port after shutting it down. The way i fixed the port switching was via the setting - network, I switched the interface rules of ETH0 to the 10gig port, then ETH1 to the 1gig port, shut it down, switched cable between ports and started the server back on. So now that i got that all switched and all my dockers and everything are working perfectly accessing the network and internet via the 10gig port mapped to eth0, i no longer can access any of my shares. I cant even access my system with ... \\tower I can access the unRaid server just fine from the IP address to the GUI, but now i need to fix my shares. I tried to access them from my Windows 10 desktop, Windows 10 laptop, and older Windows 7 laptop i have laying around and the minute attempt to access it i get an error within Windows. I googled it, tried the common fix I see of enabling the guest login, but that didn't fix my issue and I don't think that is it, since its multiple systems unable to access the shares.
  14. I recently built a new Unraid server without ever having knowledge of Unraid previously. I designed it so it could be used for multiple purposes. I wanted it to become my new NAS storage, Gaming PC, Plex Server, and Video Editing rig all in one. So this was the parts i put together... AMD 3950x 2 x GTX1080ti 32GB Ram 1TB M.2 NVME SSD 500Gb M.2 NVME SSD The plan was to use the 2nd GTX1080ti i have for hardware acceleration in Plex and other dockers. I had the 2nd GPU from my crypto mining days already. Well since installing Unraid, i have come to realize all the bugs associated with trying to run VMs on AMD x470/x570 mbs. Currently my onboard audio isn't functioning, all of my USB 3.0 ports don't function, and NVME seems to not function correctly in Unraid VMs. My computer case im using is Corsair 1000D, which is designed for dual system watercooling with a 2nd motherboard area for miniITX MBs. I am thinking of ditching using Unraid on my 3950x and purchase an intel 7/8/9/10 gen budget celeron/i3/i5 CPU + miniITX mb and install it as a 2nd system, then run unraid on this 2nd system as my dedicated NAS + Plex server using quicksync iGPU and switch my new 3950x build back over the baremetal. I tested baremetal and everything works.. Audio, USB3.0, and NVME gives full drive speeds and keep my handbrake usage on the baremetal rig along with video editing. Example build: Intel i3 9100 w/UHD630 $75 Asus Prime H310I-PLUS R2.0 $89 G.Skill Aegis 32 GB 2x8gb 3200Mhz $59 EVGA SFX 450psu $39 Then sell my 2nd GTX1080ti to offset the 2nd build.
  15. Im not gonna lie... the performance of this would be terrible. The 3900x and 3950x both have a very limited amount of PCIe lanes... so after the 2nd GPU your performance will suffer horribly even if the motherboard has 3 full x16 slots. Most of the AM4 motherboards when you plug 3 GPUs into them, they will drop the first GPU to 8x, 2nd GPU to 4x, and last one to 2x or 4x only.
  16. I have been curious of this myself, SSDs are slowly dropping in price and we are starting to see enterprise used drives pop up on the used market. I am fairly new to Unraid, i started out my testing of Unraid with 2 x M.2 NVME drives (Parity and Disk 1) to test things out on the trial while i shopped for sales on the shuckable WD drives and after i replaced the parity and disk 1. I noticed there was practically no difference in transfer speeds between using the M.2 as parity and disk vs mechanical HHDs. I downloaded the trim plugin and asked questions about it on reddit, but noone could answer why i was seeing similar speeds. It was only after adding one of the M.2s as a cache drive that i saw nearly 3x the transfer speeds. So it seemed like the parity ran as a set speed non-dependent of which type of drive slotted in place.
  17. Hello All, I am currently still on the trial for unraid, but my experience with the use of VMs has really dissapointed me thus far. I built my new computer with the intentions of using Unraid as the OS to combine my NAS, Plex and Gaming PC all in a single machine, but i feel like ive made a huge mistake thus far. System Specs: Corsair 1000D AMD 3950x MSI x470 Gaming Pro Carbon 64GB Ram CL15@3600 500GB Samsung 970 Pro NVME M.2 1TB HP EX920 NVME M.2 2 x 10TB WD Shucked HHDs 2 x EVGA GTX1080ti 3 open slots for future storage HHDs Issue 1: My original build had the HP EX920 NVME only, but i ran into an issue with the NVME controller not being compatible with unraid, causing it to error out as unknown pci device, so purchased a well known working SSD the Samsung 970 Pro. Issue 2: Since i am running AMD, the onboard audio does not function... so was forced to use monitor for hdmi audio, but the quality isn't as good and i had to do the MSI mod to get it to work period, now when the VMs bootup i get very loud popping sounds and occasionally when a game loads for the first time in full screen it makes the same popping sound... still deciding what to do in the future for sound.... Issue 3: All my Windows 10 VMs for some reason limit my download speed to like 2-5mb, but my upload speed will show the full 150+ speed. Testing internet speed via speed test plugin i get like 100/100 to 130/150 connection, but ALL my Windows VMs are limited and it makes browsing the internet very slow and streamed videos buffer a lot. Issue 4: None of my USB 3.0 ports function, i can plug things into them to charge like a cell phone, but outside of that its like they don't exist, no hardware plugged into them is recognized, i was told this is a common bug with AMD also... Issue 5: I seem to take like a 10-15% loss in FPS playing the same games i played on this same system on baremetal for some reason... Issue 6: Currently i have 30 out of 32 threads issued to Windows 10 VM, saving the first core/thread pair for Unraid, I can be playing a game, CPU usage in unraid will show like 17% total, but lets say i drop a video into my handbrake watch folder to auto-convert, i can see only an increase of total CPU usage of 30% and i start experiencing random stuttering, i will have plenty of ram available. I also dont get as bad as stuttering, but if someone starts playing a plex video, i will see sometimes 30% fps drop while the video is transcoding. Issue 7: I cant get some usb connected devices to function even in USB 2.0 slots. I am a huge user of Samsung Dex on my phone plugged into my PC, because it makes checking emails and specific apps convenient, but i cant get it to even recognize to trigger Samsung Dex. In unraid the device is listed to check off for passing through, but it doesn't seem to see it inside the Windows VM. Issue 8: IDK if unraid just doesnt use NVME natively when the drive is used as a cache drive, but i noticed running VMs on the same drive were much faster according to crystal disk mark when i passed throught the NVME drive and not use a vdisk for the VM, if i add the same drive as cache, then install the VM using the cache drive only for the image location, its like the NVME speeds are non-existant and its running at normal SSD rates. On the reddit ive been told to try using Linux, so i have and im seeing my own type of issues. In Linux i cant even use HDMI audio at all, as soon as i plug the speaker system into the monitor, i will start getting graphical artifacts inside linux, but if i unplug it.. it goes away. I tried on BOTH GPUs and i get the same issue... also some of the software i use day to day i have not been able to get working in Linux, there is not linux version and Wine has been a hassle trying to get it to work with everything thus far.
