That's how the zfs ARC works, you can set it to a smaller size, see the release notes, though it will release the RAM if needed for something else.

Ok that makes some sense now. I just don't get why they left ZFS take so much by default. I mean physical raid card now days they build them out to have 8Gigs NVRAM Cache. And depending on how a user sets that up. It might not use all the ram space or it might. I get that ZFS is a different file system and its doing a bit more functions. But it makes me think about this for a minute. Because I don't think they are using ECC ram on Raid cards. and when it writes data to the array. its basically doing the same thing. Just a much smaller bucket and more controlled.  Well yeah I'll have to force the ram size so it doesn't slow down something else just in case.

I really like how the ZFS array is coming along in this release. I just wonder how much we can expect to see in gui for ZFS? Like if we will get snap shot and scrub scheduling. Or if we are going to see what we have right now and be done.

But currently I would like to see a little bit more like being able to make the main array a Raid z1 or z2 pool.

That kind of makes things a little bit hard for me. I certainly like how the main array is very adjustable. And using what I'm asking for in the main array. Kind of goes against the name of the product. I really like unraid because its the easiest approach for setting up dockers and VM's and those things are very solid for what I use.  One thing I that is making me kind of roll back and not use ZFS as the main array. The ZFS memory requirements. And I don't understand why it doesn't flush out the memory much. Example if i run backups to another array. It will use a bunch of extra ram and then the server will sit idle for like 18 hours and the memory doesn't go down. I mean 18 hours and still it never used anything you copied over. only thing that worked for me was to reboot after a data backup. Well anyway this is giving me some other ideas and maybe get off this ZFS native request now.

  4. I currently don't have a 3rd server to use as a test box. So my backup box is my test box. I'm wondering like if we are going to see any Gui tools for like Scheduling snap shots or Scrub?
Also one more odd thing I can't seam to figure out. if I delete Snap shots I'm wondering they I still see the count here? the totals don't seams to match up.

Nothing says you can't simply use a flash drive you have kicking around for the array

Oh wow I never even thought of that. Thats a brilliant idea. I've been using some small 512gig SSD's but with me using my 2 TB size ones for my Cache Drive I really havent had any need for my stack of old 512g's and 240gig ones.

But I really didnt like wasting the stat ports and power. your Idea is much better. Thank you.

It's already been announced that this will change in the near future, once multiple unRAID arrays are supported.

Sweet that will be nice. I guess for now I'll keep using on my backup box and start transferring data. Then when Offical release is done. I'll load up and hope I can just import my pool. After that then the hard work will start. Figuring out how to move my dockers etc...

  7. I love the new ZFS options now. But what would have been really nice is if we could make the main array a choice. Like if we wanted to make the main a ZFS array or use unraid array style. Because I hate having to waste a Disc to add to the top array that I wont use. Oh well I should complain because I'm finally getting something I wanted for a while now.

Oh also my top bar seams like its not displaying correctly. like I can barley see my buttons is that because of a plugin by chance?

  8. One question will ZFS Snap shots be added as a plugin or will it be part of the OS? Or is that even something that will get supported? I'm looking forward to seeing this work as similar to TrueNAS as possible. I really like how my old FreeNAS days the Snaps shots on Shares worked with windows and looked liked Shadow Copies. It was one reason why I was able to actually use a old FreeNAS box as a Network share for one of the offices now days I might not ever do that again in production. But I would like something simple to use at home.
