  1. I have several mypassport WD disks which I had planned to use in unraid. Sadly I've found they are native USB3. Is there such a thing as a caddy that takes a USB3 drive, that you can connect a SATA cable to? Trying to find something with Google is just a nightmare as every suggestion is the other way around!
  2. I plan to start by using my current gen3 i7 processor/board. I don't know if I'll get that far with it with what I want to do, so if not, will upgrade the hardware. Will it remember all the disks (presumably by UUID) and keep their configuration, even if all the sata ports change on the new motherboard?

    Any ideas anyone?

Also, I have an ASUS GTX760 - is this any use for encoding?

I've watched a dozen videos about CCTV and I think I've decided to run the Shinobi container on unraid. Now, one of the videos I watched (actually for Blue Iris, but I'm guessing the same applies) suggests using a generation 6 i7 or above as it supports h265 encoding directly on the CPU. Does this work when running a container? I watched Spaceinvader One's setup video, and he said that he couldn't get h265 working so I'm a little confused?
  6. Ah ok I see, didn't realise that. So it's kind of like RAID1 in that sense. And presumably you can have either the parity drive fail, or a data drive, and it will rebuild. What if the data drives total are bigger than the parity drive?
  7. That's a great help, thanks. Related, if I have 5 drives of sizes 1t, 2t, 2t, 4t, 12t - what's the largest resilient virtual drive I'll be able to create?
  8. I'm planning to use a SAS card with two 1SAS->4SATA breakout cables. For the card, is this a good buy? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B089KPG2WM/ There's also this one, which is three times the price... worth the extra? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AENN2LW/
  9. I'll check those out, thanks.
  10. As a newcomer to unraid (but a techie nonetheless) that leaves me with more questions than it answers
  11. What would be the effect of that, anything? And can it take over the job of parity (as I will be adding it to the array last, after I've copied the data off it)?
  12. I'm looking at setting up an unraid box. I currently have a 12TB HDD with all my stuff on it, and a few much smaller disks to use in unraid. What's the best method here - can I add the 12TB disk in from the start but ring fence it until I have transferred everything over to the array? Or another method? Also, any problems with this set up after the 12TB disk has gone in, given that it will likely be greater than the sum of the other disks?
