Hi all. Not sure if this is the correct place to post. Edit: Found out my parents have upgraded their internet and so I can backup there So remove all the information from below and my question now becomes How best to backup unraid to a different site PC The issue I seem to be running into is "backup" vs "clone" EG I can just run rsync to a second unraid box and have two in sync. But I would miss out on data protection EG deleted files, or file history What im after is something more along the lines of crashplan / backblaze where it has version history But without having to run custom scripts and mess around with too much "config" EG a nice qui to just say copy this folder to this server ------------------- Original post: I used to run windows as my home NAS, and had backblaze home as my backup solution. This worked great. Iv since moved to unraid, and put the backblaze docker on top to continue backing up But iv noticed the performance isnt what it used to be I have a few VM's which get backed up pretty regularly to my NAS via Veeam. and my CCTV footage also uploads to my NAS to then be backed up to cloud Meaning I have a fair bit of daily data rotating though. Iv noticed that backblaze is strugling to keep up I dont even have my CCTV folder int he backup list yet, and its still running behind never actually fully backing up Where as on my old windows box it would run just fine. Im putting it down to the virtualisation layer of docker, and wine slowing the performance down. So im lookig for the best way to backup my data. I could push to S3 or something like that, but then id have to have some sort of file management system to expire out old files, deal with versioning, etc. (and id have to calulate cost into that) Iv looked at carbonite, but they dont have a good plan to fit Also looked at crashplan and it seems ok (although slightly more expensive then Backblaze) and im worried about the performance again if I swap over. What is the "go to" method to backup your unraid to cloud / offsite Im ideally looking for a set and forget. cheap (ish) unlimited or a good quota (due to the amount im backing up) and fast (Based in NZ so internet isnt the best if going to US / europe for EG) And yes iv considered putting a second NAS at my parents home and backing up there, and if thats the best option ill go down that path Just requires buying a second round of hardware to host it and finding the software to do proper backup, not just replication (EG file deletion, history, etc) (and the amount of data i push though i dont know if their cheap internet would handle it) Thanks in advance for any input

Thats what I thought, but I was just worried that I was getting the high disk usage alerts on disk 1 and 2 when the rest are pretty much empty. I assume thats because of the large gap in size difference between them all? The 147GB disks are bringing the high water line down for those disks meaning more data is being written to the larger disks? I assume the answer is go with high water, and just leave the warnings till I can get more balanced drive sizes?

Hi all. Im not sure what information is needed to help troubleshoot so please let me know if I miss something out. I have a fairly new unraid install on a decommissioned box I got my hands on. I originally installed it using the 146gb drives which came with it. I have started swapping them out for some spare 500GB drives I had laying around, till I can put some money aside to get some 2tb drives. Most of my 146gb disks were around 50-60% usage But when I swapped one of them out for my 500GB drive, that drive blew out to 80% usage, and the others dropped down to 30-40% I assumed it was something to do with the high water setting, and asked around but no one could help me figure it out I changed my settings to most free in a hope to try spread the load out a bit more. And left it for a few days to let the data sort its self out (most of the data is cctv footage at the moment so changes pretty frequently) The other day I added a second 500GB drive, and the same thing happened both my 500gb drives are at 76% used, and the rest of the 146GB drives are now at around 20% used each. Normally I wouldn't mind about it, as I know unraid is doing its thing, but i have gotten a few alerts for high disk usage on those two drives as it is over the 70% warning line. Am I missing something obvious? or is this normal / expected?

Hi all. I have had a quick look into this, and believe It may not be doable based on what I have found, but safer just to ask to be sure. At the moment my NAS is a windows box running storage spaces Its not the most ideal and I wanted to move away from storage spaces. however some software I run still needs to be run in windows, and it needs to be a local disk to work (can't be mapped network drives or symlink drives) My way around this was to have unraid run as the "Raid" layer then install windows as a VM and mount virtual disks to unraid I know its not the best solution, but its the only one I can find which works. however I went to go set it up and while reading up on another problem I was having, stumbled into an issue I hadn't thought about Most of my disks at the moment are small, 500gb for eg. where as my virtual disks are 2-4tb, so as far as unraid is concerned its a 4tb file. It might be my misunderstanding of how unraid works, as I have been using storage spaces personally, and my job we had a proper SAN And both of these you just threw disks at it and created a virtual pool of space to use. Where unraid seems to be using it disk by disk? Am I missing something in setting up my unraid? or is this how it works?

Ok can confirm with a breakout cable that drives are detected by the card in a linux live CD So its not the card, its either the backplane or the cable linking to the backplane.

Reading online the point of this card is a HP card which supports proper IT / HBA and passes the drives though Rather then the other HP raid cards which need volume creation Either way, it still should show the phyisical disks on the command output, regardless of what raid or mode is setup on it as you would use that to create the logical drives from within the command if your using raid mode

The H240 is a HBA card, it has raid, but its set to HBA mode Thats why i got it over the p410 I originally got the LSI card but I thought it might have had problems with the HP backplane, which is why I went for HP's HBA card

Hi all. To keep a long story short, I have a HP DL180G6 server which had a P410 raid card The battery on the card died, and since I wanted to move to unraid anyway, I decided to not replace the battery and just get a new card. I originally got a LSI card, but iv had problems with it (have another thread on that one) but after getting stuck I got a HP H240 HBA card Unraid detects the card fine, and detects the servers backplane, but no drives. I booted to ubuntu live and installed the HP CLI tools, and again, it shows the card and backplane, but no drives. I'm currently googling around trying to find a solution or a direction to head, but I figured it might be smart to ask the community as well, as im sure I'm not the only one running into this I have attached the diagnostics from unraid, and a photo of the output from the cli tool (i tried to save it, but being a live cd I forgot it wouldn't save properly) nas01-diagnostics-20221013-2001.zip

I have a feeling its the cable which is causing issues? I just spent a bit of time last night booting and rebooting and every time the card detected the backplane but didnt let me go any further Ill see if I can borrow a new card and cable from someone and then update when I have run some tests.

Ok so after messing around I can get it to boot and detect the expander (i think it might be a dodgy cable but not sure) however its still not detecting disks I can boot into the LSI Bios and it says Enclosure - HP GL18xG6BP But when I try to select it, nothing happens and booting into unraid, it detects the enclosure as well, but no disks show up as selectable. So back to thinking its the backplane which isnt liked.

Update Got my hands on a breakout sable, and it is detecting the drive just fine on the LSI card Next step to assume is either backplane or cable is broken or the backplane isnt supported. Is there a way to check this firmware without a HP card? I suspect since my LSI card isnt detecting it, I can't use that for testing.

Thats something I didnt think of, do they have firmware? I thought they were just like a complicated breakout cable?

Thats what im thinking. Its a single cable between card and expander (only one port on the expander its self) Im not sure of the model for the backplane its self (without pulling the whole drive assembly apart) but its for a HP DL180 G6 12-bay LFF drive Found the exact one here https://serverfault.com/questions/404545/dl180-g6-12-bay-backplane-connections I tried any 20.x releases and its just erroring for me on boot to bios, the 19 version is the only one which actually lets me into the bios. but I can give 20.7 a go if I get it working

HI all. Firstly, sorry for the long post, I have tried a few things and want to put it all down so I dont loose track myself of what I have already tried. I have a older HP server with 12 drive bays which I have been running for the past few years as my home NAS. I have been running windows on it A) As when I set it up, windows was all I really knew, B) It supported mixed drives using the windows storage spaces C) It ran my backblaze software so I could backup the entire NAS to backblaze I decided I wanted to move away from windows and go unraid, but I knew the HP raid card I had didnt support IT mode, So I got a LSI 9211-8i, Put it in the server and confirmed it showed up in bios, and sold the HP raid card as I didn't think I needed it any more It sat in the server for a while turned off as I didn't have the time to setup unraid on it, till a few days ago. Finally put unraid on and found that none of my drives were showing up. Attached a drive to the onboard sata and it showed up fine. I then went to upgrade the firmware on the card and it complained about putting IT mode over IR mode (or whatever the other mode is, sorry cant remember at the moment) So I found instructions on how to make a dos usb and flash it that way I flashed it to 20.07 but still nothing in unraid. So more reading online said you can boot to the bios of the card and use that to configure it, but when I went to boot into that, I got a PCI error Fatal PCI Express Device Error PCI Slot ? B00/D07/F00 0E I then went back to version 19 of the firmware, and it booted fine into the bios, But in there under the SAS Topology page where I expected the drives to show, it said no devices to display. I tried swapping the PCI port, swapping the SAS cable around, and putting it in slot 1 and 2 cleaned the servers bios to be safe One time I did get it to show HP expander something (cant remember and didnt take a photo) but only once I went to upgrade to version 20.06 on the firmware to see if that helped, but that still got the same PCI error (Although a different error code) B00/D03/F00 0E (not sure if thats to do with changing ports etc?) I did notice that during post, firmware 19 showed LSI but 20 showed Avago, not sure if thats relevant At this point im not sure where to go forward. I know the cable and HP backplane worked fine with the old HP card I dont know if its a problem with my LSI card, or a compatibility problem between the LSI card and HP backplane. I would buy a SAS breakout cable to test the LSI card, but they arn't cheap where im from, and it would take a few days to get here, so hoping to exaust all other options before going fown that path. I do have photos of everything if anyone is interested and can take more on request Or can provide any debug or version numbers, I just dont know what is needed to help troubleshoot so didnt want to dump everything on here Thanks in advance for an help
