    Incredibly, all I had to do was install "NoMachine" and utilize it to connect to the machine.  The GPU pass through was even simpler than for Windows since there's no editting of the XML that I had to do.  I now see the card in nvidia-smi (note that I am seeking an ML / Data Science usage...not graphical).
