  1. And these are the exact reasons LimeTech may never see implementation into the Large Scale enterprise corporate environments.

     

    What's worse you now have someone like Linus of LTT talking about BTRFS in his systems, which now 100's of thousands of viewers are getting possibly misleading information

     

    This is the only thing that truly frustrates / infuriates me about unRAID.  True support is not even a joke, it's less.  I really hope it's something Tom and the team plan to change.

     

    Then again, who knows, maybe they like where they're at.  I just could easily see unRAID dominating the large scale corporate , and enterprise systems, if they just focused on organizing some sort of real support.  (I know it's a lot, believe me I know.)

  2. So I woke up this morning to an unpleasant surprise. I have the ipmi plugin installed that can send email alerts for system issues, and it emailed me at 3am (while the system was completely idle), that the cpu was at 103 degress Celcius and had been there all morning.

     

    I sprinted downstairs to see what was going on, opened up my Norco, and found the cpu heatsinks/heatpipes etc to be cool to the touch... Machine was completely idle with 3% usage...

     

    I rebooted and cpu temp reading returned to its normal idle temp of 39-43 Celcius...

     

    Anyone seen this before? Is this a motherboard issue? A cpu issue? a fluke?

     

    One thing I noticed was if you convert 103 F into Celcius, you get 39.444 .... Could this be a conversion issue?

     

    Also, I'm wondering if the mods should move this thread (or parts of it), to the cpu forum. I'm not sure if our discussions are still relevant for good deals...

     

    [EDIT] It happend again, though this time, it seems to have reset itself immediately (time stamp was the same second)...

     

    I haven't actually let mine run more than 2-3 hours at a time yet as I've still been testing & benching.  I'm sure I'm going to be effected by the same issue.

     

     

    Wow! I reached out to ASRock support after posting and they sent me an email with updated BMC firmware and bios! Can't complain about that customer support!

     

    I'll flash the board tonight and report back! :)

     

    Is the firmware and updates available on their website for others to find directly? If not, could you post up the links they sent you?

     

    I'd like to know as well, I'm going to be flashing this update as soon as possible too.

  3. I haven't seen the thread, but I'm going to assume these troubles will be more than likely linked to poor quality PSU's.

    Do yourself a favor.  Buy a quality brand PSU, it's the one thing in your systems you should never go cheap on, and in reality it should be the first component in any build.  One bad zap from your PSU and you could lose ALL hardware.

     

    SuperFlower, Seasonic, EVGA(Rebrands of Both Previously mentioned) are all great PSU choices.

     

    I will be eventually going redundant server grade power supply on this rig, as this will be running 90% of my business, I just haven't had the time to research into it yet.

  4. Just did my first round of testing, threw three 1TB drives in, and a 5TB.  Though my Windows 10 install couldn't pick up the 2 1TB drives, (This is probably due to the onboard secondary Intel 602 Controller those drives were plugged into), unRAID found all drives no problem.

     

    I will say the fan in the rear of the 5in3 is a bit loud, but I'll end up swapping it out.  The two SATA power pluggs are poisitioned horribly, one directly on top of the other.

     

    In all they are solid 5in3's.  I'm a fan of iStar accessories.

     

     

    Side note:  I would definitely recommended volt Modding the mid fan wall 80mm fans down to 7v.  Its a simple molex pin move, but makes a hell of a difference.  At 12v those stock 80mm scream.

    I confess I've also resisted jumping in on this, although I'm VERY tempted.  [For some strange reason, my wife thinks my 3 UnRAID servers; 3 HTPC's; 3 desktops; 3 older "spare" PC's; and 5 laptops are enough for the 2 of us without the need for yet-another server  :) ]

    Mother of god..... Can anyone tell me if the hard drive cages on the side can be replaced with 5x3's as well? Would be quite perfect, I do believe.

     

    So an update:

     

    I got my iStar 5in3 HDD cage in today.  News is: this case does fit 5in3's in all front bays, I guess it just depends on the cages you want to use.

     

    The last shot is the configuration I'll be using, and the fitment couldn't be any more exact.

  6. On a side note:

     

    I'm VERY tempted to pull my dual MSI 980Ti Golden's out of my personal rig, throw them in the new server with a Intel 730 SSD.  Load up Win 10 Pro and give this thing the gamut of Bench marks just for giggles.. (The Dual Xeons are already hitting damn near 20k on CPU Mark)

     

    Even though the business is keeping me pretty well occupied, if you guys are interested in the results, I can probably make it happen this weekend.

    Confirmed: (at least the Micron Brand they sent me the first round MICRON MT36KSF1G72PZ-1G4M1HE)

     

    My father and I are both running it.

     

    I'm soon to be running 128GB of it, I made the mistake of placing two separate orders my first round and ended up with two completely different kits.

     

    I will say this, the second kit they sent was Samsung M392B1K70CM0-CH9 and it WAS NOT Low Voltage 1.35v rather 1.5v.  Though, it was low profile with heat spreaders, I was tempted to keep it....  I never even tested the Samsung, I sent it right back, and confirmed a third order of specific MICRON MT36KSF1G72PZ-1G4M1HE.

     

    Hope this helps, this server is a BEAST!

     

    EDIT:  It's worth noting, LizAnn there is very responsive and helped me out within minutes.  She did confirm if you order two or more sets at the same time, they will make sure it's of all the same brand and part.  (never hurts to put a note in the comments when ordering though.)

  8. This is actually a pretty good case, It's been housing my current unRAID build for the last 3 years.

     

    It only has one real drawback and that is the handles.  They are exceedingly large, and made it impossible to close the door on my rack, (Though I am using an AV rack).  I had to remove the handles, but the problem is the hinged door is built into the handles, so the whole front door had to come off as well.

     

     

    Still a great cheap case, with TONS of cooling.

  9. So I've been doing some testing with the Marvell SE9230 controlled SATA III ports on this motherboard (ASRock EP2C602-4L/d16 SSI EEB)

     

    It looks like it's specifically the RAID function of this controller that's giving us grief.  I have confirmed if I smash 2 1TB drives together in a RAID1 then turn on VT-d I can see the RAID1 array within devices on my unRAID.  I know this probably isn't news to anyone, but if anyone was thinking of setting up a RAID1 then using that as a cache drive or VHD store, it could be  workaround for now...

     

    Though we still lose SMART reporting functionality...

  10. For those of you that are going with a 2 socket motherboard, how are you orienting the heatsink/fans?

    The ASRock EP2C602 mobo I bought has both CPU slots in line front to back of the mobo.

    The two options I see are:

    1. have both heasinks/fans blow air towards the back of the computer but the problem with this is the heatsink closer to back will receive warm air from the heatsink further forward, so the fan will always be running harder to keep the CPU at the same temp.

    2. have both heatsinks/fans oriented sideways so they blow towards the side (towards the PCIe slots) so both fans get cool(er) air, but this way am I interfering with the front to back airflow that should happen in a rackmount case? At least this way both CPUs will get similarly cool air.

     

    Ant thoughts on which is the best configuration?

     

    I decided to go with both fans passing through each other front to back. This will keep cool air passing through the case front back, and will also ensure I don't get stagnant heat buildup in the case, since the air will pass through the rear exhaust. With the CPU coolers I'm using, (Noctua's linked in my previous post), they're such overkill, temperatures will be negligible between the two with the amount of air that moves through the fans.

     

     

    Hows the noise from the cpu coolers everyone is using?

     

    I was looking at picking up more ram for my current server, but now I'm very tempted to go this route instead. This is an amazing deal.

     

    Since I'm not installed.in my case yet, I can't accurately answer. However, noise is not horrible but definitely audible, remember these are server grade components and are not made for the quietness.  With that being said once everything is installed in the case and in my rack, noise level shouldn't be more than normal hum.  The Noctua's come with a 'Y' splitter, and two low noise adapters that cut the fan rpms down. I'm currently running just the Y adapter and I would say the noise level is in the 20 DBA range.

     

     

     

    Would either of you guys know the height from the top of the cpu to the top of the cooler.  These look like 4 inch high coolers.  I will be a bit tight at 4 inches in height.
