  1. This one is for dmacias to field… I go to "Create VM" load in all the iso's, show the directories and get down to the dropbox for USB Devices=YES. Ah ha… I see my choice "Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0e8d:1887 MediaTek Inc." and I check it. I hit "Create VM" and nothing. I see files in my directory but no vm created. What happened, or what was supposed to happen. Can I edit my XML file to reflect what was supposed to happen….Just Wondering ~ Dave
  2. How do I delete a share from my cache drive, I see how to add them. I've tried deleting through both OSX and Win, but they won't highlight to delete or move to the trash. I don't see any way to delete shares with the WebGui. These were created when I did my KVM setup. OMG I've done it now! As long as I'm this far, how would I format just the cache drive to get a fresh install? Dave
  3. I'm sitting at work, reading your post. So you added a pcie usb port card to your mobo and pass it (the whole card) through to win8.1 and this way it doesn't mess with the unRaid OS. Am I reading that right? If so, what usb card are you using, our boards are somewhat the same, so I might have to make a run to MicroCenter for a card and Win8.1. Thanks...Dave
  4. Appreciate that. I've been reading through that thread, will probably start playing with it this evening. I guess I might switch to Win8. Which should I use 8 or 8.1? Is one more versatile than the other? Which one has more support? So now I should be able to use the Plex and XBMC as plugins? Just random thoughts.....Dave
  5. htpcnewbie and dmacias, Thank You, you guys rock! Win7 is up and running like a champ. Not as clean a file directories as I would like, but this is totally a learning curve for me, I'll worry about the petty stuff when I setup as a main server. Now it seems I'm in the same spot I was in with Xen. All I have is my onboard audio, so I guess I'll have to figure out how to pass this through to windows, is that what passthrough is? And I'm back to that pesky DVD/CD usb rom, so I can use Makemkv to add files to my drives. Can't see how a guy can have the ultimate HTPC without this capability. Again, any and all help would be appreciated, where the heck do I start? Thanks Again, Dave Do you think a usb controller card would help with this, I noticed it in other posts...
  6. I'm doing something wrong, you guys posted and it all made sense to me until I went to work. I currently have the Win7.iso and the virtio.iso on both cd and flash drive. So I say, let's do it, I put my flash drives each in a USB port (2.0), boot up unraid. KVM, virtman, libvirt running, all systems go! Go to the "Create VM", go to install image, no USB showing, go to virtio drivers (iso), no USB showing. I'm looking at htpcnewbie, "<source file='/mnt/disk/SSD1/vm/media/Windows81Pro.iso'/>" and "<source file='/mnt/disk/SSD1/vm/media/virtio-win-0.1-81.iso'/>" and it looks like the files are already SSD drive equivalent to my cache drive (also I just named it cache instead of SSD). My question is "How in the heck did you get these iso's from cd/Flash drive onto your cache drive/SSD. This is the obstacle I can't seem to get over, everything else makes sense to me if only I could get that far. Thanks, guys for the help so far….Dave Edited by me, I'm over thinking, I'm downloading directly to an image file I created on my cache drive, is this correct? We'll find out…..
  7. This is where I'm at. I have Win7x64 iso and the Virtio drivers iso on a CD, however, they are not seen on the "Create VM" screen from my cd player (USB). This didn't happen on the Xen install because the XML forced the cd to be seen. ('file:/mnt/cache/VMs/Windows7/Win7x64.iso,hdc:cdrom,r'). Same with the drivers. How do I make this happen? I see reference to a "create Template section", but I can't find it, would the template allow the dvd/cd player to be seen? Is this the template: Posted by JustinCase on 30October? Where can I find all the fill in's, this is daunting to this old guy! Dave
  8. I got Win7 installed with the instructions by Ghunter in the XEN forum. All was going great until I tried to use the DVD player and like everyone else I hit the roadblock, so I continued on my quest. Then I decided to try the KVM, which seems to be the answer, however, I started following the instructions through the first two install steps and hit another brick wall. Seems like from there everyone was trying to connect to Win thru the VNC viewer, but I can't seem to figure out the Windows installation. I see the Window setup screen, can I use the Win7x64.iso from my VMs file that I set up on my cache disk when I setup it up in XEN (XEN is currently turned off) or do I need to start from scratch with the iso from the dvd. Which part of the Windows virtio drivers do I use, do I install them from an iso like Win7? Are these files, isos, xml, and drivers setup in the cache drive, or where do they get setup at? I have NO XML file experience except to edit XML templates. My build is new so I'm not worrying about throwing anything out of whack, just tryin to get up and running. Is there a good template to start out with that can be doctored. I see plenty of snippets, but not quite sure how to put them together.. I'm kinda really lost, so any step by step installation sure would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave
  9. Doing a parity check and just got done installing Win7 in zen. When to restart Win7, won't let me because of memory usage. I notice in Dashboard my memory usage @ 98-99% Is this normal, can the memory be released?
  10. This is what I'm looking to do. Currently my "active" server (5.0.4), all media, serves media to my "in house" XBMC boxes, Minix, TV2, RaspberryPI, each being self-contained only accessing the media (I love my toys), and PLEX server (utilizing my cache drive) handles my media over the internet. In order to add media to my server, I have to use my Win7 computer with makeMKV and save to my server share, be it Movie, TV or Music. I guess I could do the same with my new setup but that's not the purpose of my new server. Now, I have my new server (v6b12)setup with 3 shares, TV, Movies, Music. I think I would have to add Win7 VM, in order that I would be able to use makeMKV (only comes in two flavors Win or OSX) with a DVD drive connected by either internal connection (5.25 bay) or externally by USB. So, is this possible to do in Zen? This would do away with the two computer scenario. I don't use say, CP, transmission, none of that…just XBMC and PLEX. If so, then the next step would be to add the DB for XBMC, in order that my other devices would be able to connect and add the PLEX server for Plex outside the home. Should I add another SSD so I have one for cache and one as a vm container? Most of the tutorials are gauged at "older" versions of v6, but have been very informative. Any guidance in the right direction sure would be appreciated!
  11. Sorry 'bout that, I did mean XFS. I follow you except for the cache drive, should that not be btrfs? When i look under format, it just lumps all three drives into the format as XFS, should I take out the cache drive format the data and then replace the cache? I'm lost at the gate…. Right or wrong, it's done. Waiting on parity check and then on to the next challenge. I don't remember all this on my 5.0.4 server.
  12. I built a new unraid server in the past couple of days, many hours spent perusing many forums only to get many questions. I have a 3TB parity drive, two 3TB data drives and a 250G SSD for cache drive using v6b12. My understanding, very limited, would be to format the data drives using ZFS and the cache drive as btrfs. Do I need to format the parity drive? I have the AsRock Z97 Extreme4 mobo, therefore, using non-ECC memory, so did I do myself in as far as the ZFS format goes? Will this affect the performance? When I want to clean shutdown from the command prompt after booting up, what are the commands? In other words, not using the Webgui.
  13. Well, after two days of reading in the forum, I've decided to leave my server alone. Basically it's a media server (about 13,000 tv episodes and 600 movies) that play well together in Version 5.0.4 using Plex outside and Kodi (xbmc) inside. I would love to play with Ver6, but it looks like an inordinate amount of time is needed to tweak containers, plugins, and dockers to get them to play together. I may play with Ver6 on a small test server as time allows, but I don't want to be patching an already working system. To all who have put so much time and effort, I thank you, keep up the excellent work
  14. I'm toying with a complete new build, so I can find out all about this virtualization tech, dockers, drive formats and such without putting my current rig at risk. When I build this new box, can I physically transfer drives from my old (current V 5.0.4) rig to the new V 6 rig without loss of data or do my old drives have to be copied to new drives on the V 6. I just don't want to put my 10 drives of data at risk. Thanks. If I took my current USB disk, backed it up, and put V6 on it and put it in my current rig, isn't it just a matter of using the drop down menus to match my drives in the logical positions to upgrade? How to upgrade to 6 without losing the data on my drives? I get sweaty palms just thinking about it!
  15. I got the upgrade bug. Built my rig about 2 years ago and been running strong since unRaid 5.0.4 (31T Total)(if it ain't broken, don't fix it), however, no virtualization. I want to replace my mobo and processor. Microcenter has this bundle: ASRock z97 Extreme 4 w/Intel i3 4370 which looks like a pretty good pairing. They have an AsRock z87 extreme 6 w/ the 10 Sata ports that I'd REALLY like, but will it handle the virtualization? So, I guess what I'm asking is the ASRock z87 extreme 6 with the Intel i3 4370 a good pairing, will this handle version 6? Any suggestions, additions, deletions, trade offs. Thanks in advance!
  16. As I sit here this very moment, I don't have a new drive "ready to go". Let's say a drive goes down now, I buy a new HDD and replace the "broke" one. If I don't have it precleared, will unraid clear it, format it, and rebuild it or does some of that have to be already done? Quite an education here, been running this for 3 months now, and just learning this!
  17. Let's see if I did my homework OK. Let's say my #5 3T data drive goes south, I would replace it with my 4T parity drive (that's what I have in there at current) and put a 4T fresh drive that has been precleared in place of the old parity drive and let unraid do it's thing from there, right? So, it looks like I have to get a new 4T drive to be precleared, am I on the right track?
  18. I'm still extremely new to all of this. So, let's say a drive craps out on me… I've read a lot about drives being rebuilt when replaced, but what am I rebuilding? Will it replace all the info on that drive from the info contained, or is it just rebuilding the parity?? I have all of my drives backed up. My unraid server works great with XBMC for internal and Plex server works great for external and the rest of it is bare metal, the more you add, the more chances of breakage… But, should something go wrong, I don't have the foggiest, is there a tutorial about unraid that explains the basics in layman's terms. It's like I built a football, but I don't know how to play the game, is there an instruction manual or up to date wiki about this. Thanks for all your help so far!!
  19. The last entries for this were back 3 yrs ago. Is it necessary to scan for viruses and if so, what do I use and how often?
  20. Does anybody have a program or system they use to rid the Apple Dot files from their server? I see some on Google, but not specifically aimed at unRaid. I have so many now, I think they are taking a significant amount of space that I could recoup. So, how do we get rid of them?? Thanks!
  21. I got it setup, I don't know that it's hot swap, but it's easily accessible. As of now I'm backing up some files (TV Series) to a Toshiba 3TB. I'm figuring to only use about 2.4TB (80%) in case some needs to be added or moved. How much do you allow free space on your backup drives? Are you using the Pro edition of Teracopy, is it worth the money? BTW, Thanks for all the help!
  22. The Thermaltake box says that it accepts drives up to 3TB, however, the website says 2TB. I bought it for the 3, so back it goes. After some fresh thinking and a pot o' joe, I figure to use my Windows box with this "http://www.microcenter.com/product/266839/SATA_Hot_Swap_Rack_with_Lock" and then I won't deal with any externals, and won't have to worry about size. They also have these little cases that look like the old translucent cigarette case back in the 60/70's as storage. That should go the trick, but still, what copy program do you use? Still brings up the point, what do I use to pre clear a disk, can this still be done on the widows box?
  23. Gary, after today's fiasco with this, I'm going to get a eSata caed for my windows box and connect it to that as I don't want to screw with my unRaid server for awhile, and get better versed with the learning curve. My question would be what copy program do you prefer? I'm thinking 3TB drives as that's the max on the Thermaltake. I was just using the !TB as a practice run.
