  1. I get done with my parity sync this AM and look at my cache drive in MyMain (unMenu) and it's showing HPA?. How can this be, I'm not using a gigabyte board (asRock z87 extreme4) and it's a SanDisk 64GB drive. From MyMain: Cache Disk HPA? cache sdl Unknown 63G 5986 2,449 2,620 63G 5% 59G 33C Spinning sm hd sy sh From Main Menu: UNRAID Drive Device Model/Serial Mounted File System Size Used %Used Free /dev/sda1 /boot 7.99G 91.82M 2% 7.90G Cache Drive Device Model/Serial Mounted File System Temp Size Used %Used Free /dev/sdl1 /mnt/cache 33°C 63.02G 3.13G 5% 59.90G Drive Partitions - Not In Protected Array Device Model/Serial Mounted File System Temp Size Used %Used Free /dev/sda1 /boot * 7.99G 91.82M 2% 7.90G /dev/sdl Is there a problem, or is it time to walk this to the dumpster? Yeah, I'm PO'd, it don't make sense…. I notice all this after I start my parity check which won't be done until this evening. What do I do, stop the check, turn something off, I'm going to have my morning coffee and stew for awhile…..so much for my backup idea I just changed the attributes to hpa_ok=1, I hope I did OK? Confirm, anybody?
  2. This is a hard error to diagnose because it's so broad. I just went through this myself. I did many things and finally I haven't had this error in a week or so. (Fingers crossed). Watch where the error happens and see if there is any common denominator of what your system was doing when the system error occurred. Mine alway happened when I was writing to my drives with MKV and renewing my lease. I went to a static ip address and replaced my cables to the server with new cat6. Make sure the flash drive with the unRaid OS is securely seated. Make sure your cables are well seated to the mobo and your cards and memory is seated correctly. Make sure you have updated your card and board bios so that your cards and ports are compatible. I also made sure that I was running the current version of unRaid, mainly because the upgrades had hardware upgrades that pertained to my board. While there is no guarantee this will work, it doesn't hurt to check and double check, it doesn't cost anything. Good Luck!
  3. Got my box all up and running smooth, no errors, all I could ask for. So I'm a glutton for punishment. garycase's suggestion to backup hit home. I have about 16TB of media I want to backup. So this evening I bought a Thermaltake BlacXDuet shoe, put an extra 1TB drive for the learning curve, connected it to my box via eSata cable. So I'm all dressed up and no place to go. unRaid can see this 1TB Hitachi drive when the array is offline as if I was going to add it to my array, but I don't want to do that. What my head says I'd like to do is have a FAT32 format and systematically copy movies, TV shows to the drive as backup and when the drive is full, simply store it and if I lose a drive copy over the files I need from the stored backups.. Little by little back up my box. Sounds good in theory, but no cigar. I'm using mc and I can't find the drive, I don't know what it's called or where it is and the same thing with Teracopy on my windows machine. Where is this drive, I know it's there, unRaid can see it, but I don't know where else to look. I've checked about every file in mc, I don't know. I'd like to stay within the server so the files don't have to migrate through Windows or OSX, drive to drive. Any ideas??? Oh well, unRaid did't like something I did, I lost my parity drive, so I had to shut down, re-add my parity drive and I'm in the process of a re-sync. Any ideas to make this plan work, I don't want to lose my parity drive again, but I'd sure like to figure a way to backup. (puzzled) Re-sync should be done in AM. I wonder what I did to wipe out my parity drive? Ahh, this would.nt be any fun if I didn't have any challenges…...
  4. I can only tell you from my experience and info learned here. I have the same card, installed about two weeks ago. When I first connected it the drive did not show up. There is a row of green LED's that let you know that there is drive activity. I had to flash the bios on the card and it started right up. Search the board for SAS2LP and you'll find all the info about flashing the card, then again you may not have to, you'll know when you put the drives in.
  5. I'm still concerned about the high memory usage and I'm also showing about a 2.4% Rx packet drop. All I have is the asRock z87 Extreme4 mobo, Intel i3-4340 CPU @ 3.60GHz, and the SAS2LP-MV8 PCI-e card. All I have on my drives are media for XBMC and Plex running from unRaid. All seems to be working fine. Keeping this in mind and this is my first build, I want some help before I really get in over my head. I've been reading my syslog and these things come to mind: 1. My current unRaid version is 5.0.2 and from reading my hardware list it seems feasible that I should upgrade to 5.0.4 mainly due to the SAS2LP card upgrades. I flashed the card with the current bios to get it working when I first installed it, it didn't work otherwise, but I don't have any idea what the ID is. So, first order of business would be to upgrade my unRaid version, correct? 2. Here's where it gets touchy, would a mobo bios flash be recommended? My current bios is P2.30 dated 7/03/2013. The current bios is 2.60 dated 12/17/2013 (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z87%20Extreme4/?cat=Download&os=BIOS). It says not to flash if no problems but I'm dropping packets and high mem usage. Would you try flashing the new bios? 3. The only OS I have on this bear is on the USB flash with unRaid, but I'm reading on the main page of my mobo that asRock has "Easy Driver Installer is a handy tool in the UEFI that installs the LAN driver to your system via an USB storage device, then downloads and installs the other required drivers automatically through the internet. Completely no CD or optical disk drive required!" - Not running Windows or anything, is this a necessary upgrade as maybe my dropped packets are from the LAN. I really don't know anything about drivers in Linux. Being my first build, I want it to purr like a kitten, I really think I should upgrade my unRaid version, but I'm not really sure about the rest….Any warnings, suggestions, additions or deletions would surely be appreciated…..Thanks and Happy New Year to All!
  6. If I connect an external HDD to my mobo by eSata port, will I be able to access that HDD from my eth0 WITHOUT having it a part of my array. In order words, would it be treated as any other external HDD? I don't know if I want to spend the bucks for it not to work. Would I be able to copy files from it to my array with a program such as Teracopy? Would I be able to use an eSata shoe to say preclear a 4T drive to have ready as a "ready drive" in case of drive failure?
  7. I noticed that I was getting the "Tower kernel: mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged (Errors)" on my Syslog quite often. I noticed that the common denominator for these errors was that I was writing directly to my drives from makeMKV, i, like you, was worried about data corruption. It took me awhile to figure where these errors where coming from. I have been extensively writing to my drives with Handbrake in the past 30 hours and have not had any errors during the writes. I notice that Handbrake log shows that it writes to the capability of the CPU. I've ripped about 30 DVD in that time period. No errors. I believe that makeMKV may be at the root of the problem. I used to write to an external drive with makeMKV and copy to unRaid, and this provided no errors, but I didn't like the time involved of doing the job twice. I'm going to try some other tweaks during the week, upgrade my mobo bios, add drivers for my eth0 to stop some packet drops, but for the most part I think I've got it tacked down. Try the Handbrake, I think you'll find it more unRaid friendly, doesn't cost anything to try...
  8. I'm not sure this will help, but I had problems with AFP for a while, not being able to write, then after aggravating trial and error, make sure that your SHARES have the AFP setting set to YES and I have mine set to public as well as AFP set to YES in the SETTINGS, BOTH places had to be set to AFP. Voila, all of a sudden, AFP works like a charm. Doesn't hurt to check...
  9. Thanks, Gary. Got that new memory this afternoon and replaced the 8G in the rig. Maybe premature, however, looks like a good memory distribution, and no errors reported so far. I still figure it had to be the memory as this mobo has one of those Dr. Diagnosis and wasn't reporting any error codes, they only seemed to show when getting near to maxing the memory (so explains PMS). Soooo…if I get an error code now, this old stubborn retired Marine will just build a bigger, better rig. Thanks, Again. Maybe spoke too soon: This is crazy memory usage: (from /usr/bin/free -l) total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 16307620 15895292 412328 0 150240 15421148 Low: 770708 397848 372860 High: 15536912 15497444 39468 -/+ buffers/cache: 323904 15983716 Swap: 0 0 m there. Only thing "extra" I'm using is unMenu and PMS. I'm shutting them down and see what happens from there. It's kinda getting me PO'd.
  10. I'm thinking about this on Thursday: http://www.microcenter.com/product/374226/16GB_DDR3-1333_(PC3-10600)_CL9_Dual_Channel_Desktop_Memory_Kit_(Two_8GB_Memory_Modules) Sheese, more looking…CL11, CL9 or 9-9-9-4?? I think that may just do the trick. Thanks!
  11. I'm using a EVGA NEX750B SuperNova 80Plus Bronze, so I think I got the power covered. I got my memory in the right slots, checked and double checked. After some research, I think, but not this evening, I'm going to recheck my memory, may be ECC (not supported by my mobo, or my i3 processor. so, I'm still on track for a memory change, maybe?
  12. I been pondering this for a few hours now, and my elderly powers of deduction, have done this. here's the error:Tower kernel: mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged So common denominators are overheating CPU, nope, running at a cool 38C. I've taken my rig down, separated all cables, rechecked connections, restarted. Next common error cause could be: "Memory errors or Error Correction Code (ECC) problems" tends to lead me back to the memory modules. So far the only time these errors appear is while PMS is running. My memory usage seems extreme: (from /usr/bin/free -l) total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 7984548 6229672 1754876 0 139756 5872260 Low: 836244 624200 212044 High: 7148304 5605472 1542832 -/+ buffers/cache: 217656 7766892 Swap: 0 0 0 My old powers of deduction seem to be leaning towards memory, but I'm going to hold for awhile and see what happens with PMS off. I may be out in left field, but I just can't see the processor or the board as the problem...
  13. I'm getting a hardware error in my syslog, be that as it may, I didn't have this problem until I started playing with Plex. I believe that it has to do with Plex playing with my memory. I currently have 2X4G, but was just wondering what the optimal memory would be for my unRaid rig. asRock z87 extreme4 mobo with Intel i3-4340 cpu. I have 10 data drives (31T), parity drive (4T), and my cache drive (60G). At this point cost is not the object, performance is, I have so much in it now, you get the idea. What memory sticks would you use for optimal performance?(http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z87%20Extreme4/?cat=Memory) Thanks!
  14. Just kind of a general question. Can I use my unRaid array with XBMC while running a Parity check?
  15. I just got my AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 in the mail today. I gonna try to put in in this evening. Just a couple of questions for my simple old mind. 1. Boot the system to DOS. 2. Flash the BIOS using the mvf.exe file with the following command at the DOS prompt. a:\>mvf 9485.bin This automatically flashes the BIOS. 3. When the flashing is completed, reboot the system. The new firmware is now flashed to your system’s BIOS. So I'm going to take out my unRaid OS drive, replace it with the DOS drive and then run the above and then replace my unRaid OS and reboot, right? My AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 should not be connected to anything other than the mobo, should it?? How does the DOS drive know to flash my AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 and not my mobo?? I'm sorry, I haven't played with this stuff for 20 years or more, so Thanks for bearing with me.
  16. Joe L., Thanks for the help, I'm going to mess with this, this afternoon, but I did have one more question, when in the heck do you get any sleep? You're always here!
  17. What would this line look like? "or add a line in the /boot/unmenu/unmenu_local.conf file to tell it to use the IP address instead of your server name for unMENU links" and how would I add it? Would it mess with Windows then, which seems to work OK now?
  18. /as luck would have it, I have both in my little man cave. The unMenu works OK under Windows 7 computer, but ain't with a tinker's dam on my Mac. But after some scrutiny on Windows, unmenu just seems to be a statisticians dream, but that's about it. Seems I can maintain my media server just fine with the stock interface. Thanks for the help. Time to move on...
  19. So far I've got the Tower unRaid Server to come up, but no links or anything works, if I try a link, just says Safari can't connect to that page. I'm stuck in the mud, I don't know where to go from here. What in the heck is a "go" menu or script???
  20. OK, my luck. I been playing with this for three hours, read, typed, read, typed, no go. I put unmenu on my flash drive, run it, opens the file, type ./uu tells me No such file or directory. Type boot/unmenu/uu, No such file or directory. OK, what's up? BTW, I'm unRaid 5.0.2. I'm looking at my flash directory…I have two folders UNmenu and Umenu, should I be using /boot/umenu/uu maybe?
  21. I notice in my directory I have files named "._filename" and they're all the same size 4.1. Do they do anything or can they be deleted?
  22. After much research on the board, I found a list of compatible (or not) Sata controller boards, where I should have looked at prior. My Vantec going back, and I'm going with the Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8. That should do the trick!
  23. I been at this about two weeks now, my frustration level is growing, and I really need some help. I have an asRock z87v extreme4 mobo with with Sata ports, no problem, unRaid sees the drives, no errors anywhere, good to go! So I use most of my drives up transferring all my movies and such over. The drives that I copied from are now available to add to my array. I'm out of Sata connectors, so I add a cage to my Fractal case for three drives and a Vantec 4 channel 6-port SATA 6gb/s PCIe Raid Host Card and connect three more drives to unRaid. I start up and see the drives, place them in disk 8, 9 and 10. unRaid sees them and I have to Clear the disks to add to the array and when cleared they will be added to the array, sooo, I clear the disks, it gets finished after about 45 minutes and they, disks 8, 9 and 10 disappear. Back to the drawing board, they do not show up again until I stop the array, shut down unRaid and restart. Then it's the same drill all over again. Is it the SATA card, I don't know, what am I missing?
