  1. Hello, I've got an Unraid server that I'm suspecting has a bad motherboard.  It turns on for a few seconds then shuts down.  Did some troubleshooting a while back and my best determination was that it was a mobo issue.

With that in mind, is there a good doc / instructional somewhere that might address moving an existing Unraid server to new hardware?  I've seen some threads where people are doing this but thread usually revolves around an issue they're running into.  And often times diagnostics are requested from the prior/old server (which I won't have).  Any first step suggestions?

    I don't see any 10TB disk connected there's one 8TB but it's connect to a USB port:

    Device Model: WDC WD80EMAZ-00WJTA0
    Serial Number: 7SGLR2PC
    LU WWN Device Id: 5 000cca 252c88197
    Firmware Version: 83.H0A83
User Capacity: 8,001,563,222,016 bytes [8.00 TB]

Ah shucks you're right.  I didn't realize that the USB attached drive (which happens to be the same kind of drive as the one I shucked and am trying to install) shows up as an option for the array disks.

Looks like I'll have to try out that kaplon tape.   Thanks @johnnie.black

For Unraid to recognize a new drive, the array must be stopped and the GUI needs to be refreshed after the drive is added (hot swappable).

Or power down the system, add the new drive and power up the system. It should show the new drive. There are no limitations for 10 TB drives (or larger).

The symptoms I posted were done using the power down approach.

  4. So I shucked a couple of WD EasyStore drives to use for my server - one 8TB from 2017 and one 10TB from 2019.  Here's what I did:

    1. I first plugged in the 8TB and it was recognized with no issue.
    2. I then proceeded to put in the 10TB but that was not recognized.
    3. I have an ASRock E3C224 which has 6 SATA3 slots - 4 by Intel and 2 by Marvell. The 8TB went on the last remaining Intel slot and the 10TB went on a Marvell slot.
    4. Thought maybe the Marvell slot is not configured or not working or something ... so I swapped the SATA cable from the 8TB to the 10TB.
    5. UNRAID recognizes that a drive is there, but says it's 8TB.

So the questions that pop up are

    1. Is there some sort of limiter that's only allowing 8TB?
    2. Is UNRAID caching the presence of the 8TB I first put in? The drive ID value is the same no matter which drive I put in.

    Anyone with experience or thoughts?

    Thanks!

For me it seems that way. I tried to run it headless on my X99 system (no integrated GPU) but every time I tried to boot the VM that was assigned the GPU in the topmost PCIE slot it would not boot the VM (black screen just like if not passing the VBIOS). I just added an old HD5450 dedicated for the unraid GUI and now I have no issues passing my 290X's to individual VM's.

I had a somewhat similar problem where my BIOS would use PCIE as priority (over integrated) but if I didn't have a monitor hooked up to the GPU, it wouldn't boot properly.  I got a HDMI dummy plug (https://www.amazon.com/Headless-Display-Emulator-Headless-1920x1080-generation/dp/B06XT1Z9TF) and then things started working.  But, I did also change my BIOS to default to the integrated GPU so not sure if that helped too.

I don't really have room to add a third card, so I really need this to work, as everyone says it should...

So I was about to try and go down the same road / build as you.  Curious which threads you're referring to that says passover of multiple GPUs should work and how to do it?

You could try passing the ROM to the graphics card.

I had this issue too when I only had 2 GPU's, the first GPU in the system just would not allow me to pass it through no matter what I did.
To get both of my 290X's passed through to separate VM's I had to add a 3rd GPU in the slot above both 290X's for unraid to use to let me pass them through.

I even tried following a guide to run unraid headless but that didn't help at all.

Question:  What ROM are you guys referring to?  Are there specific ROMs that need to be utilized for unRAID to be able to pass them through?

Also, based on your comment, does that mean one GPU always needs to be dedicated to the unRAID server?  but sounds like there's a way to run unRAID headless but not 100% feasible?

Both of my servers are mini-ITX and I know others here have similar. Drives are pretty large these days and my media collection isn't growing very fast anymore.

And, SFF (small form factor) has more WAF :D

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wife_acceptance_factor

Indeed they are.  I haven't even used up my current drives (only 3).  Though I've played with the idea of adding a cache drive and the additional bay options might be nice.  Luckily for me, WAF has a pretty good high tolerance, lol.

I have one huge and several small machines. A little guy with 5 drives in 4+1 configuration can fit 48 TB with 12 TB drives which isn't too shabby.

48 would be plenty!  But can't justify paying that kinda money for 12TB drives (didn't even realize they made those).

I wouldnt pick ryzen until all issues with it are 100% fixed, but you must know for yourself.

What you want to do at the same time? or all 3 things not at the same time?

16gb Ram is relative low, i would suggest atleast 16gb only for gaming + something for unraid so maybe about 32gb, if u can afford.

As far as what i read about pass thru, it works with some work, but never did it myself. BUT SLI or such things wont work!

I was a little hesitant on ryzen but by some comments, it seemed like there was only the one issue with disabling the C6 state.  Though I can't say that I don't have a small bit of concern in the back of my mind that would likely be eliminated if I just went Intel.

I won't be doing all 3 at the same time... just need the ability to do all 3.

If I understand SLI correctly, it's sharing of workload between GPUs?  That wouldn't be necessary as each GPU would be working on their own separate task.  I just need to make sure that a single VM can detect all GPUs.

Tiny case.  I don't understand why tiny case for a server.  What if you want more HDDs?

    Are you ok with that?

Good point.  TBH I wasn't really thinking about the case and just throw on a standard one.  I changed it to a full tower just for cost purposes but will look into the details / features later.

  10. So I have an existing unRAID build that unfortunately does not support the virtualization I'd like to take advantage on in the current versions.

I plan on utilizing it for

    • Plex
    • Win10 VM - Occasional gaming
    • Win10 VM - Mining (supporting 4-6 GPUs)
    • NAS

    Those are the main things.

I already have a PSU and HDDs.  Here's a list of the major components I'm considering:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KXQmzM

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jcrjM8

Just wanted to get a sanity check that the above tasks are realistic.  The biggest question is the Mining one - that multiple GPUs can pass through to a single VM.  I've read threads here of success so it must be doable.

    Thanks!

  11. I'm thinking this question is probably packed with many sub-questions / case scenarios.  But the overall thought was whether or not I would be able to double my UNRAID server as a general video editing machine as well.  Being that the software would be for Windows, my thoughts are my possible options would be the following:

    1. Utilize GPU pass through with Windows VM.  My only concern here is that at a quick look through the forums, there seems to be a lot of quirks and heartaches associated with the getting the pass through working.
    2. Add a secondary SSD for a Windows install.  I would simply remove the USB when I want to use it.

    2. admittedly sounds like the easiest approach if it could truly work that way (I don't see why not as long as the Windows install doesn't touch the UNRAID drives).

    Thoughts or suggestions?

  12. I'm running unRAID v5.0.5 and using an OSX Yosemite client.

When I open up Finder and connect to Tower, I see all my shares... but then I also see my physical drives, too - disk1, disk2, flash.  I believe at some point it wasn't doing this.  Only noticing it recently, which some what coincides with an upgrade to Yosemite.  Not sure if they're related.  Currently only using SMB as my protocol.  Ideas?

    Neevermind.  http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Configuration_Tutorial#Export_Settings

Must have been toggled some how.

  13. I would suggest installing Dynamix for version 5 (It provides a GUI that has the 'look-and-feel' of ver 6). See Here:

            http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=30939

For apcupsd for version 5, see here:

      http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=29605.0

Dynamix was the first place I went to look when trying to install this.  But it doesn't have the apcupsd as part of it's collection of plugins (unless I'm missing something).  Unless that was just in regards to my comment of using unMenu.

So far I tried to install a version of the apcupsd plugin via unMenu but not successful so far.  I'll see where the above thread leads me.

  14. Note that in the latest v6betas apcupsd is built-in so no plugin required.

You already linked to the official docs for apcupsd. You will actually be setting it up in the unRAID webGUI so that also guides you somewhat. Just try it and I think you can figure it out.

It gets a little more interesting (but not difficult) if you try to link an additional PC to it over the network like some of us have done.

I think I found a thread that mentioned that.  However, I'm still using 5.05.  I forget why, but I recall reading something that made me think that an upgrade to 6 was not for me.

As a casual user, I usually just use the normal web GUI but turns out I needed to go to UnMenu to really get to the meat of things.  Not exactly the most friendly of interfaces but I can manage.  Still think this might warrant a blog "how-to" post.  I haven't found things very easy to find.

  15. I'm slowly getting into adding a UPS (and by slowly I mean I just plugged it in, lol).

From what I've gathered, there's only one plugin - apcupsd - that we have which will work with a variety of UPS.  Are there any "dummy" guides out there in terms of how to get things set up?

If not, perhaps I may go about writing something and sharing later, but ideally there's already one.

  16. hi dlandon,

could you help me to activate automount for exfat drives?

i installed exfat tools from piotrasd (http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=24850.0).

    https://app.dumptruck.goldenfrog.com/p/Vq3zpArAKB/fuse-exfat-1.0.0-i686-1PTr.txz

    https://app.dumptruck.goldenfrog.com/p/Vq3zpArAKB/exfat-utils-1.0.0-i686-1PTr.txz

i can write to a connected and manually mounted usb2.0 drive formated with exfat. i use mount -t exfat /dev/sdf1 /mnt/temp to get access.

how can snap.sh be updated to support exfat?

can you help me with that?

I don't think it's a good idea to have SNAP mount a file format that is not supported in unRAID.  That being said, you can edit the /boot/config/plugins/snap/snap.sh script and add the exfat mount.  Look in the script for a case statement with the other file formats and you'll see how its done.  That should be all that is necessary.

So I'm in the same boat as phenomeus.  I'd like to try and modify the snap.sh but I'm no linux / script expert.  Is there something I can reference that can explain what's going on in the script?  Even simply a reference to what scripting language I should look up would be useful.  I just don't want to be blindly making updates to the script and not understand what I'm doing.

  17. SNAP makes this easier, but it is not critical. Mounting drives outside the array can be done very easily from the command line. I use an rsync script to do the actual copying.

Sounds like a manual, automated script seems to be a common path.  Was a bit spoiled by ReadyNas having it automatically done for me.  Another thing to learn I guess!

  18. the CX series is a very low-end unit that I've seen a fair number of compatibility issues with.

That's great info.  I just based it on my wattage reqs and figure that would be enough.  Never knew it could cause compatibility issues.

It will indeed limit the power draw to a max of 35W for the CPU.  HOWEVER ... it's not any more power efficient than the non-T versions when running at lower loads -- which will almost always be the case.

Good point.  I guess when I read the specs, I was thinking a continual 35W when in fact it's only at max usage.  Thanks for pointing that out!  That'll let me save a few bucks.

r.e. backups ... always glad to see folks who understand the importance of backing up

It scares me not to be backed up.  I don't get how people can sit knowing they're not covered.  But I guess a large number of users are using for movies, etc.

Thank you very much, Gary!  Those were excellent, excellent answers.  I'll wait for a few more days to see if anyone else has something to add before I start finalizing my decisions.

  19. Excited to be starting this new adventure.  My last build was almost 15 years ago!

    Anyhow, here goes.

    Final Results:

    • Did without the "T" version of i3.
    • Was going to get the Corsair TX650 but found a deal for a HX750 for only $10 more.

    Overall cost without drives, $601.99.

Thank you, Gary, for all your great input!

    Notes:

    - The Seagates will be pulled from an old ReadyNas unit.  One might be dead.

    - I'll probably pick up a USB stick for the unRAID install.

    Requirements

These are pretty simple right now and I think they're pretty much what unRAID is designed for.

    - Storage for a lot of photos.

    - TimeMachine backup.

    - Ability to backup to external HDD.  SNAP?

    - Budget: $600 +/- $100.  W/o drives.

    Future Requirements

    - CrashPlan

    - SickBeard

    - VirtualBox

    - VPN

    - UPS

    Questions

    - You may have noticed an old chassis listed up there.  It's this one here: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/15/antec_sx1030/index.html .  It's an ATX chassis.  So it should still fit whatever MB I pick as long as it's ATX or mATX right?

    - I like the system to be efficient with it's power so I figured I'd opt for the Intel "T" version of the CPUs.  Is there any draw back to going this route?

    - My third requirement is a heavy one.  I really want the ability to backup automatically to an external HDD.  While I understand SNAP will allow me to mount the drives, is there anything to automate the backup?

    - Does it make sense for me to keep the i3?  i.e. Is that what I will need for the future requirements?  Or would a G3220 be sufficient?

Those are the main things I can think of right now.  I'm sure I'll have more ?s later but keeping it to the major ones for now.  Hope everything above makes sense.

Thanks so much for taking the time!
