  1. I am doing some housekeeping after a fresh install.  As my shares have matures over the last 5 years using Unraid, I wonder if it's time to update my split levels. Or just leave things as AUTOMATICALLY SPLIT ANY DIRECTORY AS REQUIRED.  I do notice however that some of my shares, even individual movies have files over multiple drives. I'm looking for suggestions for these 2 use cases.

    Goals:

#1 -  only have to spin up a single drive for a single movie.  As it is, for instance, the MKV file could be on Drive1, the NFO on Drive2, the Folder.JPG on Drive3.  It would be convenient to only spin a single drive.

#2 - group files for individual TV episodes and even entire TV seasons onto a single drive.  That way, binge watching wouldn't have to spin up an additional drive between episodes. I don't mind seasons going onto different drive, especially since some shows can get really quite large and it seems silly to drive to put a couple hundred GBs of a single show in one place

Currently, everything set to AUTOMATICALLY SPLIT ANY DIRECTORY AS REQUIRED and using High-water. (I've seem some arguments for leaving automatic, but switching to fill up instead)

I was considering giving each TV, Movies, Movies2160, Other their own top tier folders, like so with the following splits: (I think this should split TV shows by Season and Movies individually).  Please check my thinking.

TV (SHARE)  ---------->(AUTOMATICALLY SPLIT ONLY THE TOP TWO DIRECTORY LEVELS AS REQUIRED (High-water) -> Should split as Season1 on Drive A, Season2 on Drive B, etc )

    Does this all make sense?

  2. How can I enable hardware transcoding in the Linuxserver.io docker?  This is new to me.  I my googling, I saw to just click off the -->Transcoder->"Use hardware acceleration when available" and then also "Use hardware-accelerated video encoding" boxes. I have transcoder quality at "prefer higher speed encoding".

Here is a list of my settings:

Transcoder quality: Prefer higher speed encoding

    Transcoder temporary directory: /transcode

    Transcoder default throttle buffer: 60

Background transcoding x264 preset: Very Fast

    Disable video stream transcoding: UNCHECKED

Use hardware acceleration when available: CHECKED

    Use hardware-accelerated video encoding: CHECKED

    Maximum simultaneous video transcode: Unlimited

    As for the docker,

/mnt/user/appdata/plex runs on the cache drives (I have 1.5TB total in SSD)

transcode directory: /tmp/transcode (this may be a mistake, not sure)

I peg all 16 cores at times.  Frequently it will hover at 40% for a transcode of 2160->1080.  Is this expected behavior?

I and using a /transcode directory mapped to /tmp/transcode.  Maybe I don't have enough ram to execute this manuever.  Where is an appropriate place for me to place the transcode directory?

    Asrock Rack E3C246D4U

    Intel® Xeon E-2288G

    2x DR42666 ECC 32GB Samsung M391A4G43MB1-CTDQ (total 64GB)

  3. My 5+ year old Unraid Server has finally gone to heaven.  My existing SSDs and Data Drives are still good.  My RAM may still be good.  I'll try to reuse my existing 3U rackmount case and hot swap bays, as well as NetApp expansion.

So I guess what I'm really looking for is Motherboard, Processor, PSU, maybe RAM recommendations:

-Budget: $1500 - $2000 is reasonable for me.  I have a good accountant that can stretch this as a business expense and therefore write off

-How many drives: Existing system without the NetApp 4243 expander is 14 drives. (10 platter drives and 4 SSD) and another 8 right now in the NetApp. The NetApp seems to have problems with drives > 4TB, not sure if if it's a 3.3v pin issue or something else.  Every time I try to drop a large drive into it, it's not detected. I was using a SuperMicro X10SL7-F.  This actually did have 14 SATA headers.  Since this is very rare it seems, then I will likely need a PCIE Sata/SAS card dropped in.

-Use case: Plex for about 3-4 people.  Mostly 1080, but some 4K.  HomeAssistant, Letsencrypt, MariaDB (light use)

Seems like Motherboard/CPU will be the most improtant starting consideration.

  4. I'm confused my searches and reading on this subject.  I was running dual parity with 8TB drives.  Just replaced with 2x 10TB drives, they are rebuilding parity now. I have the 2x old 8TB drives to be added into the array.  Once the parity rebuild is complete. can I just add these drives in as data drives?  Do they have to be reformatted?  Do I have to preclear? 3x Preclear cycles takes around 5-6 days (10TB took 6.5 days).  These drives were working fine, it doesn't seem necessary to run the preclear on them again.  I'm attaching a pdf with my Unraid Main page from the GUI if that helps visualize this better.

I appreciate any help.  Thank you very much.

  5. well, some good news.  SSH didn't work, but the motherboard is a SuperMicro with IPMI, so I can watch

the boot seemed to hang at /bzroot

Edit: after the first attempt which allowed me to atleast attempt SSH login, now Putty cannot connect :( Still can get SMB shares

Edit2: Well, I don't know what is different.  I turned off the system so that I could install a new Video Card so I could try to get a front end and seen what was happening.  When I turned the system back on, Unraid was working.  I don't have any good explanation for this behavior. I'll attanch the diagnostics file if it is helpful.  Now I'm scared something is about to fail.

  6. I have signatures turned off.  I didn't even realize I still had one. Thanks.

    Er... having trouble SSHing in.

    I tried Login: root Password:[none]

I tried Loging and Password from the webgui

Both gave me access denied.  Admittedly, I think it is years since I SSHed into Unraid. So maybe I just don't remember the password

    network.cfg

  7. Last night I clicked update on the OS.noff the top of my head, this was to 6.8, but honestly I cannot remember without seeing it. This was just the next stable iteration, just like I've always done. On reboot, I couldn't access over web interface. This box is running headless, and the video connector is actually broken on the motherboard. Anyway, the physical unit seems fine, drives are spinning up. I CAN connect over SMB and see all the files, play videos. My front ends won't connect over the usual NFS shares. Where do I start? It looks like I can see the flash drive contents. What info can I post for some help.

Thank you all so much, I've always appreciated everyone here so much.

  8. I seem to have made a mess of things. I'm sorry I've posted so many times :(

I've had Unraid running in the same Computer for 4 years without major issue.  Same shares have been set up for 4 years also.  Recently I have a drive give out, and while replaced, I seem to have multiple issues that keep coming up, some I've posted in other threads and I truly thank everyone that has helped.

Next issue I've run into: I don't seem to have write access to my shares.  I'm not sure how this happened, I didn't change any settings in the shares.  I cannot write files from a Windows machine under SMB shares.  I also cannot write files on the Unraid machine itself using Krusader.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?  Again thank you guys.  I'd always felt reasonably good about my set up, but this week feel like such a failure at this.

Edit: FWIW I cannot add any additional shares now either.

  9. How do I clear errors once they are found.  I had a drive go bad.  I replaced it with another drive and rebuilt from parity.  Great, back up and running.  Fix Common Problems still shows me the error. Example: "Unable to write to disk8     Drive mounted read-only or completely full. Begin Investigation Here:"

Drive 8 was the one replaced/rebuilt.

  10. 1 of my 2 SanDisk 512gb SSD cache drives is giving an error.  It looks like a reallocated sector count.  At least I think.  I'll include the smart report attached. From what I've read previously, as long as the reallocated sector count is staying the same, then it is fine and it's doing it's job, but if the count starts increasing then time to retire the disk.  I would appreciate some help as I'm a little out of my depth here.

Next question, if the drive is OK to keep using, then how do I make Unraid stop giving me the error message.  Is there some sort of acknowledge, stop telling me about this function? Other than unclicking the box under SMART setting for Reallocated sectors, is there another way to acknowledge this so I know in the future if there is a new error, that it is indeed new?

  11. Stupid question.  I'm out of slots on the unraid box (which is why I'm using the NetApp shelf in the first place).  Is there an easily download the SMART report in a windows environment? I have a hot swap drive bay on my windows box that works well.

  12. I wondering if this means the drive should be retired.  Error from Fix Common Problems.

It is worth noting that this error occured during a parity rebuild.  I had another drive with a number of write error.  I copied that data off of the failed drive (it was number 14) onto this drive (number 15) using unBalance, then removed the failed drive from the array using instructed here for Shrink array - The "Remove Drives Then Rebuild Parity" Method

If the disk has not been disabled, then unRaid has successfully rewritten the contents of the offending sectors back to the hard drive. It would be a good idea to look at the S.M.A.R.T. Attributes for the drive in questionBegin Investigation Here

  14. I have the same unraid hardware as previously, but lately I cannot treak 4K videos (even occasionally 1080p) to Kodi without buffering.  I'm using Nvidia Shield TVs as front ends, have been using Kodi since XBMP, which have worked well in the past. Can you guys recommends a way to figure out if this is an unraid problem? BTW, this is all hard wired Cat6, and same wiring with previously no problems
