Any processor will work as long as it is 64 bit, so Intel Celeron, i3, i5, i7, Xeon or AMD.

Some HBA's can work out of the box, some need to be flashed, you need to check on the forums to see what people have bought that works OOB.

If you have an existing unRAID server, you can expand it yes, it really depends on your license which you may need to upgrade.

I have a full license man. So that ain't a problem but choosing the necessary hardware is confusing for me.

Pretty much any hardware will work, however you need to put thought into things like, physical space, are we talking a tower case or a rack mounted case? Noise levels, do you want quiet or can it be a little noisy, how many drives do you want to have, do you want hot plug drives?

If you have rack mounted case let's say that can hold 24 drives, you will need an HBA card, something like a Dell H310 flashed to IT mode. You can then get cables that connect to the card at one end and have four individual SATA connectors on the other, two cables like this per card and one card will support eight hard drives. Different cases have different back planes but that's not something you really need to worry about. Pick a case and then I am sure there are users on this forum who have built servers with it and can share their knowledge and experiences with you.

    Thanks for the replies man.

First of all this is india, I really have to look deeper to find specific parts.
Cabinets and racks apart for now. My concern here at the moment is what the processor to buy and motherboard for max hard discs(30 in case of unraid)  as we could someday use all the storage space available. we are constantly upgrading 4tb each month. so i want it to be scalable as well. HBA cards needs to be configured or its like a simple plug and play?

The sole purpose of the server is for file management only.

Also i have an added question, I have an unraid file server with 6 hard discs already. Is it possible to add a HBA card and extend the resources in the old server?

I suggest you add a lot more details in your post: NAS only?  Plan to run VM's?  Which OS's?  Plan to run containers?  Which apps? etc.

In meantime, study the forum, there are literally hundreds of sample builds.

Its a plain file server. I won't be using anything than zerotier for remote access.

Otherwise it's a complete storage unit for my office.

  4. Hei guys am looking to build a 80 TB Unraid nas. I already am running a 16tb out of my old junk pc now is the time for more space and am looking to build a proper one this time.
I need to know the hardware details needed to build a pc as such. Meaning i have watched few linus videos where he adds multiple hard discs on it. I wanna know how its is done and what are specific hardwares do i need to extend my hard drive beyond 6 numbers.
Very much detailed help would be appreciated.

Filesystem corruption is mostly cause by unclean shutdowns, it can also be a hardware problem like bad RAM/controller/disk, but sometimes it just happens.

Anyways thanks a lot mate. You were a real saver for me. Let me update you there issue as such persists again.

You said that you moved your server yesterday. It might be a coincidence but it's possible you disturbed something. Could you have removed the power before it had finished shutting down?

could be i guess. But i usually make sure to shut down properly. Yeah!! I could ve missed it. Lets wait and see if it repeats.

It can take a while, when it finishes it will look like the 1st xfs_repair screenshot you posted.

I think its done.  still i dont see the start button here. Reloaded the window also. only reboot and power down appears.

Since the file system remains unmountable you can't replay the log so the next step is to go back to Maintenance mode and run xfs_repair with the -L option. The wording of the message suggests this is a bad place to be; in practice the only files likely to be affected are any that were being written at the time the corruption happened.

Am hoping there was nothing written during that period.

Can you exactly drop the command i need to run here? Actual noob here :/

Post the xfs_repair command you used

Sorry the first i have replaced the md3 instead of md4. Now have run it as md4. please check the image.

    The next step?

I have loaded array in normal mode and the issue remains the same now.

To compare the data you'll need to change one of the disk's UUID so they can be mounted at the same time, you can change the old disk UUID with:

    xfs_admin -U generate /dev/sdX1

Then mount it with the UD plugin and run a compare.

Hei guys am facing some similar issue. An urgent help is required.

  12. I just moved my tower yesterday and it was well and working till then. But in the morning one of labour was trying to reach out for a file and it went missing he complained. I thought it could be a disc issue, I checked it actually is.

So how do i solve it guys. I dont understand how it went that way, its a new disc too. Handled it very safe even when it was moved am sure that there are no physical damages happened, because i carried it myself.the disc was  Bought like 1 month back. Now i am need in need of the file also its job critical.
An urgent help would be very much helpful.

Yeah, Zerotier is basically giving you same as fair VPN with

    - minus, that not all your traffic will be tunnelled, just a traffic between your devices.

+ but plus, traffic between your devices goes peer to peer without a single tunnelling service in the middle

    + much easier to setup

Thanks a lot man. It's a time saver. Not sure how missed it all this time. :)

    Application Name: ZeroTier

    Application Site: https://www.zerotier.com/

    Docker Hub: https://hub.docker.com/r/spikhalskiy/zerotier/

    Github Docker: https://github.com/Spikhalskiy/zerotier-unraid-docker

    Templates Repo: https://github.com/Spikhalskiy/docker-templates

Zerotier is an open source, cross-platform virtual LAN / VPN available on Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Linux.

It allows remote access to devices as if they all reside in the same local network.

All traffic is encrypted end-to-end and takes the most direct path available for minimum latency and maximum performance, using VPN-like connections.

Up to 100 devices for free, no need for port forwarding, very simple setup.

Network and the docker image setup steps:

    1. Create a https://my.zerotier.com/ account and create a Network there.
    2. Get an ID of the created network (looks something like b4da7454b271902c).
    3. Install this docker image on your unRaid using a template or from Community Applications and put that ID as a NETWORK_ID parameter of the container.
    4. After a start of the docker go to https://my.zerotier.com/network/<NETWORK_ID> to “Members section” area. Check “Auth” checkbox for the new device. Assign a meaningful name to it, copy an IP from "Managed IPs" column - it will be a static IP of your NAS in your virtual network.
    5. Install a Zerotier client to your laptop/phone/other devices, join a network with the same id and repeat the previous step for them.

Now, when you connect Zerotier on any of your devices - a VPN connection will be set up and all connected devices will be available like they are in the same network. SMB shares/TimeMachine will be autodetected, UIs will be accessible on <ip from the step 4>:<usual port>.

    Post an issue

If you post about an issue, it will be helpful if you open a console of the docker from webGui, run and include in your post an output of the following commands:

    ./zerotier-cli info

    ./zerotier-cli listnetworks

    ./zerotier-cli listpeers

    Clean reinstall

If you want to make a clean installation and start setup from scratch - don't forget to cleanup config directory which is "/mnt/user/appdata/zerotier/zerotier-one" by default. It contains an identity of your Zerotier node and generated certificates.

    FAQ

Q: Should I change "Managed routes" on https://my.zerotier.com/network/<NETWORK_ID> to reflect my unRaid internal IP and subnet in a real physical network?Managed_Routes_1.png.bf456d06a8b53d307d50dbe5c1c1f4af.png

A: No, ZeroTier creates a virtual network adapter to use in ZeroTier network. If your home IP range is 192.168.1.0/24 and ZeroTier by default selected "10.147.17.*" for example for you managed IPs - it's totally fine. Even opposite, if ZeroTier "Managed routes" intersect with your physical local IPs - better change Zerotier range to be different. unRaid virtual IP in Zerotier network that you can find on https://my.zerotier.com/network/<NETWORK_ID> page you use when you connected to the same Zerotier network from your other device located in another physical network and want to get an access to your unRaid and this IP is different from the physical local network IP of your unRaid server.

OMG!! It took me sometime to figure out this but I really have to say a big thank you that you have saved me finally. Been struggling with openvpn for so long(10months literally) and finally.

Finally things fell into place with zerotier. Am so much relieved.
My only concern is how much safe is this? My main work platform is this NAS if this goes down or the files go 'bye bye" that's the end of my business era. Just concerned of the security in this, except that am all in heavens now.

Did you try the support thread he linked? You should post your questions in that zerotier support thread. In general you should always use the support thread for a specific docker for questions about that docker. You can always get to the support thread for any of your dockers from Community Applications or by clicking on the icon for that docker in the unRAID webUI and selecting Support.

Am sorry for it, just that am exhausted. Looking for help anywhere.

Just published a docker template with Zerotier for an easy VPN-ish remote access solution without setting up own VPN server and without an overhead of running everything thru one server. Also available in Community Applications, simple setup instructions are in the support thread. As a final result, you will see your unRaid as it's in a local network with full access. Share please if it works for you if you gonna try.

    > Also Can I FTP to the NAS to transfer terabytes of data?

Depends on chosen solution. With VPN or this Zerotier solution - yes, you can. But you understand that terabytes will be a type of pain thru internet in remote locations in any case just because of bandwidth.

Hei buddy I have been struggling with openvpn configuration for months (8 months) Not only because am a noob but also because am not able to find help.

I tried zerotier but I don't find any tutors or easily understandable assistance. Can you please help?
    Wasted enough time already.

Not an immediate answer to your question, but an alternative way to set up a VPN between two or more locations is by using ZeroTier (see the associated docker container with detailed instructions).

The advantage of ZeroTier is that it doesn't need port forwarding on your router and avoid potential server attacks.

ZeroTier clients can be installed on different machines, windows, linux and mobile making it easy to connect to your unRAID server from anywhere and with anything.

And i can access remotely the files with directory? it doesnt work like plex media server right?

  18. I tried to open the webui by following the spaceinvader video but am kinda stuck here. @linuxserver.io some help is needed. I ve been trying to establish a open vpn for months still couldn't pass through.
