  1. while I have you all on here , the experts I had a question. What is the best way to copy over data to a new unraid array? USB? plugging in a drive inside the computer and then copying? I have eight 8 TB hard drives full of data I need to put on a 24 bay array which will have 2 drives for redundancy. So I will be using inside the 22 bays blank 8tb drives. I would think it would take me about a week to copy over the data.. I do want to keep the original drives as back up as well. Thanks!
  2. is it safe to say that unraid is safe with a 3950x?
  3. I am curious to know if Unraid has any issues with software/hardware compatibility or does it play nice like a basic 8700k intel? If so what problems have you had with AMD vs Intel when it comes to plugins, docker apps, plex , VMs etc. Please let us know ! Thanks
  4. wow this is a really good write up to my question i appreciate that thank you. I checked my plex folder now and it is roughly 100gb just for meta data so i think i am going to opt to get 2tb SSDs 860 EVOs in Raid 1 which should meet my requirement for future expansion and copying over large remux mkv files Thanks for your help much appreciated.
  5. Thank you for the info! Quick question regarding cache drives for my future setup is having 1tb in raid ssd cache enough or would 2TB be better if so why is 2tb better to have 4tb in raid for cache? Thanks!
  6. Thanks .. i guess this my best route. 1. Do not add ssd cache until files are moved 2. Do not add parity hdds until files are moved 3. Transfer files using duplicate to shares hdds 4. Will most likely attach via usb 3.0 to transfer new data . I guess duplicate gui will see the drives
  7. Thanks for the advice i remember someone mentioned earlier to not use cache and you explained it pretty well for me . Also you mentioned its ok to not use any parity hdds during the transfer. After the data is moved i just install the parity discs 2 x hdds and where do i tell unraid to ensure the parity works? I am assuming it has to do something build the array for parity?
  8. Thanks for all the feed back on how to move files.. this has me alittle nervous to be honest. However wouldnt it be better just to move files from a hard drive enclosure directly attached to my unraid box and use duplicate gui? Also i would think using cache drives in raid would also help . I know this will take a few days . But now that i think about unraid in the future would somehow become obsolete especially when 100tb drives will be out in 5 years. I cannot imagine anyone wanting to transfer 1 petrabyte of data from one computer to a unraid box if one can only get 50mb/s transfers ... maybe i am overthinking this obstacle i might face just to move 64tb
  9. Cant i just use crusader with a gui?
  10. sure thing I will do that next time I get patronizing answers to my questions . I am really stuck on setting up 64gb of ram so I can play with VMs but not sure what else I can do with more than 32gb of ram for my server? Also i have 2 SSDs as cache and already have my dell modded firmware for jbod and a intel expansion sas ready to go. The server will be mostly for file storage and plex. But think 64gb is a nice solution right now to play with but was not sure what else i can do with it
  11. photos are most important as well as documents. everything else is replaceable on the internet but would take time to replace. I think i should be ok with my array and having 2 parity disks. I will be hooking up a 1500watt Universal power supply as well .
  12. my second plan is to copy over the data 64tb to the unraid array and then store the 8 hdds in my closet inside a special case. however once my array goes over 100tb i will most likely have to rely on the array and 2 parity disks to save me since I will have no way to keep a second backup.. I guess i could invest in Tape solutions or waiting until 2023 when we have 25tb drives available. Just around the corner. We are supposed to have 100tb by 2026
  13. Thanks for the mature and intelligent reply to my question. I wish there were more people like yourself on this forum. I am sure there is but you made me more confident setting up my server. I think what I will do because my data is very important to me and yes I know it will take a few days but this is what I need to do to move 64tb and 8 drives. I might just populate my 24 bays with the hard drives , will have two 12tb hard drives for redundancy and mostly will be 8s, 10s, and a few 12s to fill the rest of the 22 bays. Once the server is setup connect via jbod to my old 8 bay enclosure and start doing a copy. Will unraid be able to see the data as a jbod to copy to the array? I really appreciate the steps you gave me but knowing me I might screw it up by forgetting which serial number etc and end up wiping my data? Or am i really making this out to be harder than it is?
  14. Cool story So whats the best way to copy over large sums of data to a new unraid server? Since posts are free you should answer this question
  15. while i got you on here since posts are free like you said if i create a unraid server whats the best way to copy over my data ? attaching a hard drive external to usb 3.0 ?
  16. talking about deals going on sale to buy the software? Do they ever put it on sale?
  17. Does unraid offer any specials during the holidays?
  18. I was thinking of putting my 8 bay JBOD as a local device on my unraid server or yes i can do it remotely on a different desktop in my LAN. Not sure if this is what you mean but which way is better? I will check out those dockers on youtube to see how they work.. ok I will use high water... thanks! and will check out space invader specifically his video on shares. I was thinking maybe copying one 8 TB a day to the server to get it over with. Just not sure if this is reasonable or a faster way to do it? Thanks!
  19. Do you think I should set up specific share folders for like Highwater I am not sure how to set up the allocation when writing to the Hard drive. Is there anything I should be concerned about such as my minimum space left on hard drives
  20. I have about 64 terabytes of data being transferred what is the best way to copy this data over to the unraid array? Also how much of minimum space should I give a hard drive when writing across the array so it knows when to stop writing. I heard this will extend the life of hard drives
  21. I am definitly sold on Unraid for sure. I already have my dell raid cards already modded for JBOD as well as a intel expansion sas to get me to 24 bays on my nordic case . I have watched spaceinvader 1 and he is the best . I just hope I can setup a cloud to access my files on unraid server off my network. It would almost make sense just to use a 2 bay cheap synology for this though because I am not sure what I am getting into.. I do plan on using SSD cache drives as well.. just a simple 8700 intel cpu with 32gb ram etc.. mostly will be used for plex 2 drive redundancy .
  22. I will be building my Unraid server soon.. how many times can you renew the trial key before getting locked out? Would like to spend at least a month or two testing Also does unraid have cloud capabilities , i saw nextcloud which is what I am looking for to use but is this free? I understand you have to store files on your server and I am fine with that. I just want to be able to link my cell phone and other devices, ipad etc. I know these prebuilt NASs have drop box, google cloud , apple cloud etc.. what do i have to do to effectively get a good cloud solution going for sharing files and photos?
  23. Thanks for the feedback you have been the most helpful regarding my question about unraid. Thanks! To whomever said to watch youtube , i have thanks....but I would prefer something intelligent from a forum member who has experience in both areas.
  24. tell what unraid cant do that a NAS can do from synology?
