  1. Hello. The four bay iStar is 80 pounds and the Icy Box is 97 pounds for five drives. Apart from the differnce of 10 UK pounds is there something i am missing that you think is better?
  2. Guys. Just to check.....will this port multiplier be ok with unRaid? http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lycom-st-126rm-sata-ii-3gbps-1-to-5-port-multiplier-bridge-board-%28for-rack-mount%29?utm_source=google+shopping&utm_medium=google+shopping Thanks in advance
  3. Thanks for confirming. Think i am going to purchase this then on friday. Craig
  4. Oh balls i thought something was available. How is the guy in this post doing? http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=14834.0 So i am guessing my only option is SATA card then
  5. Guys. Please see my other post on the Icy Box IB-555SSK Anyway. Does anyone know where in the Uk i could pick up some SATA cables that are 5 in to 1? The box has five SATA ports and i am looking to plug them in to one SATA port on my motherboard. Is this the right thing? I know its only four cables by the look of it which is fine. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3ware-multi-lane-m8-to-discrete-sata-fanout-cable-06-meters-single-cable Cheers Craig
  6. Hi guys. before i spend money. can anyone confirm that this drive bay will be ok with unraid. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Icy-IB-555SSK-Dual-Channel-Backplane/dp/B002BLZ8TO/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_2 Thanks in advance
  7. Thanks for the reply guys. I should point out that this is for my home setup so yes i would like it to be blazing fast but i can put up with a slight performance hit. I will defo take the points on board and see how the performace goes.
  8. Hi guys. I am looking at poss using a Sans Digital external 5 bay enclosure with my unRaid setup. This device comes with a eSATA card but would this device work with a eSATA to SATA cable plugged in to the motherboard? Thanks in advance
  9. Hi guys. Ok so i am going to buy a 3TB SATA 7200rpm drive for my parity. Now i am going to look at a cached drive at some point. My question is. Does the cached drive have to be the same size as the parity drive? Craig
  10. Thanks mate. That was the answer to my question that i was looking for. Thanks for explining it so well. I so wish i had found unRaid a long time ago. Been playing with it today just on a couple of small SATA disks and i have to say i love it.
  11. Ok, So even if i stored all my MP3 for example on a single disk i could still recover it fully in the event of a problem. Sorry if these are such basic questions but unRaid is very new to me. I work as Network architech and standard Raid5 i understand fully. Just trying to get my heard around this software.
  12. Hello. Sorry if this seems a noob question. I am creating a share called VMware which will be the datastore for my guests. I am not 100% which Allocation method to choose. I basically want my data spread over multiple disks so that in the even one dies i am not screwed. Which method will work best? Thanks in advance
  13. Some great replies above guys. Ok. So let assume i go for two 7200RPM drives. One for cache and one for parity. If as has been said i stick movies and MP3 and NFS on a single disk......but by doing that if that disk blows up i have lost everything correct? I really dont want to be in a situation where one of my drives is lost and i lose everything. I need to recover 100% Craig
  14. Thanks for your reply. What was your thinking behind the mix of 5400 and 7200? Is there not a hit on performace because of the mix or am i thinking about unRaid all wrong?
  15. This may sound like a dumb question. I usually always favour 7200RPM drives in my desktop but this was a throw back to the old IDE days. But with regards to unRaid is 7200RPM a waste or should i always stick to 7200RPM drives? Is 5400 ok becasue its SATA? I can get a good price on Hitachi Deskstar H3IK30003254SE 3 TB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - SATA - 5400 rpm I am looking to host MP3, AVI, MKV, Jpg and presnt and NFS share to my VMware server. Thanks in advance
  16. Thanks for the tip. I will be following it when i start my build.
  17. Thanks for the replies. VMware can use NFS as its datastore so unRaid should be fine with. I did read that iSCSi was not an option with unRaid but no matter which way i look at it unRaid seems to win each time with the way that i can add and expand on the fly. Its the one thing that stops me looking at openfiler and freenas Craig
  18. Thanks for the reply. Ok just so i am looking at the right thing from the UK , is this the correct thing http://www.amazon.co.uk/PCIE-SATA-II-CONTROLLER-CARD/dp/B002VAGSV2/ref=pd_cp_ce_1 Now for what i am looking to do. I have one free PCI-E port in my machine. I am looking to create a massive amount of storage mainly for the following. Pictures Movies with a mix of MKV , AVI and VOB files Music , all MP3 VMWare. I have a VMWare ESX 4.1 server and i would be looking to move my guests datastore off the local ESX server and on to the unRaid server. Now i have two DC7600 servers the same and i am following the post about joining two servers together. Now my HP DC7600 will house 6 drives so was looking to add 6 drives to the server and then if needs be sorting out the cooling Thanks in advance for your advice and help.
  19. Ok. so i need to stay away from RAID card. will thisdo the trick? http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_4468.html
  20. Looks like it going to need to be a RAID card as the motherboard does not support RAID. Oh well. Anyone know of a cheap 8 port RAID card?
  21. Guys. I have managed to get my hands on two HP DC7600 Convertable Mini towers from work. I think both these boxes will be perfect for the storage server(s) i wish to build. The motherboards have 4 SATA connections but the machine can take 6 drives. What would be best here. A) Port multiplier B) 8 Port SATA RAID card? Thanks in advance
  22. Huuum, more confused now. Maybe its better if i say what i am trying to do as it might change what case or route to go down. I would like to have a case with either a motherboard or without that will allow me to have say 10 drive bays min. I want to build this rig and then really forget about it apart from when i want to add more discs. I will only be adding as i need it. I am guessing i will need to add a couple if not a few SATA RAID cards. on that basis what would you say is the best routre or case to look at? Thanks in advance
  23. Ok. So i am thinking that we dont install in a motherboard in this case. So i am guessing that i just run SATA cables from the case in to my computer running a SATA card. Is this correct?
  24. Thanks for the replies today guys. Nice to be able to ask questions without being flammed as a noobie. I think based on what i have been told , been reading and answers to my questions that UnRaid is the way forward. Just need to sort the case out.
